Anyone have a copy of the smog control system for a '72 sb. I guess there is a concerted crack down, read $ grab, up here where the Min. Of Environment ppl. are going to car shows and events and looking in the egines to make sure that all original equi't is in place. My wife & I were pulled over yesterday and he wasn't sure if I needed a smog pump (air system) on my '72. If I do will need to put one on within 2 weeks or could get a $365 fine if pulled over again.
GM vintage car division told me that if my vette does need one it only has to be present not necessarily working. I have a manual somewhere in the house but where after a major Reno/cleanup it is I just don't know.
You're saying a cop pulled you over and looked under your hood and determined that you don't have a smog pump and you have to prove you don't need one? So in Canada you are guilty till proven innocent? Those cops must have quite a bit of automotive training just to identify any smog pump on every car built in the last 40 years.
thanks guys, living in Canada is getting a little more complicated. There is a huge Corvette wknd. coming soon to Wasaga Beach and they will be out in full force, looking into the engines of the cars as they sit with their hoods up. Taking pics then recording the lic. plates for "further action". In 13 yrs. of driving I'd never been pulled over for something like this. I really do appreciate all of your advice and input. The strangest thing is that it does not even have to be functional - just on the car! Just in case I called Summit and their smog pump is $92 so I might just buy one and stick it on anyway.
Hi gdh,
Hopefully your car doesn't need an AIR system.
There's quite a bit more to the AIR system than just the pump.
I don't know if the police are looking for just the pump, or are they informed enough to look for the whole system?
At $92 the pump is just the tip of the iceberg. Complete restored systems go for $1000 +. I'm not saying that's what you need; but be careful that what you buy is going to answer your concerns.
Regards,
Alan
Thanks Paul, I have been looking all afternoon for my Assembly Manual and Specifications Manual and finally found it. You are right thank god no AIR system req'd! The only reason I figure that the charcoal cannister was removed was that this car had been raced in the 70's so must have been taken out then. When I rebuilt the engine in '01 never even thought of looking to see if it was there. My mech. has one so we'll put that in early next week.
Sorry Mike, you're right about Ontario only not Quebec. I will make a copy of this sheet and keep it in the vette with me from now on at all times.

Mine (for 1974) is in the rear compartment. A non-California L-48 with automatic transmission did not have AIR. For some reason a 4-speed did.
Just do what I did when I had to pass emissions before my car came exempt..
EGR tack welded to side of the intake manifold
Charcoal canister installed and hoses taped to the bottom of the air cleaner
Air pump installed with rubber hose going to "catalytic converter"
"catalytic converter" is actually just the metal shell of a converter tack welded onto the pipe
Noone bothers to check if any of this crap is functional so it got me through emissions.
Well, guess it's just best keeping the hood down at car shows from now on, or maybe just not attend them anymore. Not sure of the laws in Ontario, but close by in Detroit, and if someone asked me to pop the hood for inspection, just wouldn't do it. Who the heck actually pulled you over anyway, as bettin' 99% of the population wouldn't have a clue of what to look for in an old car. As for A.I.R, if removed, usually some blocking plugs in the exhaust manifolds. Theory was, injecting a little more air into exhaust, helped further combustion.
My wife just told me that there were 2 other Min. of Environment cars that pulled up behind the guy that pulled me over - I was a busy looking under the hood and wondering what the hoses were he pulled up - I thought he disconnected some vacuum hoses and I'd be stuck under the car on the side of the road trying to figure out where they went. I was thinking of going to the big Wasaga Beach Corvette fest but after this I'll just bypass it even though my car is now fine. Me thinks there will be a huge cash grab with all the vintage vettes being pulled over and fines ($365) issued. I am just glad that I do not need the AIR System and Pump. At least getting rid of the breather and putting a tube in the valve cover and running straight into the air cleaner will stop that bit of oil from getting on my intake. After talking with GM Vintage Services today this is becoming more of an issue for all vintage cars in Ontario at least. I keep the car well tuned etc. but it is what it is and now I know and will keep a printout of that pdf file that proves our 72's did not have to have the AIR System (unless if I were to move to Cali.) If I ever took the vette on a cross country tour and went to Cali would I get ticketed there for not having one even though I don't live there? Must be a huge decrease in tax revenues if the gov't is doing this to grab cash.
