I'm not sure what you mean by marbles, but whatever it is it sure doesn't sound good.
Low Freon won't sound like marbles, so I'd have to go with a bearing in the compressor as a guess.
If you can, turn on the ac and put a stick on the compressor. I know this sounds Bubba but it works. You'll hear the noise on the stick and know for sure.
Either there is way too much refrigerant in it, blockage on the high side or it's just wearing out.
My wife's newer Caravan has been like that at idle for a couple of years. Sounds terrible, but cools better than 99% of vehicles out there. I'll fix it when it gives up.
Only problem with that is when takes a crap it dumps all kinds of fun peices in the system. If you don't get them cleaned out well they eat up your new compressor.

All compressor replacements require complete flushing anyway.
JMOP,
If the belt is loose on mine it sounds like marbles because the belt is hitting a guard on the lower support rod. From there a loose belt causes the AC compressor to slip and chirp loudly.
You may want to check the belt and the belt tension, which needs to be very tight.
When mine AC is low on 134A it short cycles or will not start because of low pressure switch.
Can you identify where this noise comes from, compressor, in the dash and such? Does it seem like maybe it is the fan? Junk can get into the fan housing and get beat up by the squirrel cage fan making a sound something like you suggest. If it is a fan issue it would also do it with the heat also. Try just turning the fan on without the air to eliminate that as I problem.

Have had a problem with the fan wanting to hit the fan shroud, but fixed that. It is the compressor overall. When compressor not on or not engaged, no rattling sound. Maybe it is the clutch. Is the clutch internal or external?

Note above post. By new if you mean rebuilt, R4s are sometimes noisy or can become noisy & work for a long time. A/C guys say it takes very special equip. "a wonder to behold" to do R4s.

No, it was a brand new AC Delco R4. Shop that installed it is a very high quality shop in Sugarland. Does nothing but professional work. Going to check with them today.
Or could it be the mice have brought in some acorns and they're rattling around in the airbox! The little ba$tards do that to my daily driver all the time until I kill them!
Took it in already. Full of freon. No problem with clutch. Throughly inspected. Nothing wrong according to shop. Just when it is so hot outside and when sitting at light, etc., pressure can build up. They claim the R4's can make rattling sound. It is a new compressor and shop, again, it a very, very good shop. Great reputation. So, now to chase down those squirrels!
