From what i've learned around here, GM did not keep copies of any build sheets from the St. Louis plant. All vettes from 54 to 81 were built there. If you have a Bowling Green built car (some 81's & up) chances are good that the NCM will have a copy of your build sheet. Some people have been lucky with their St. Louis built cars in that they have been able to save the sheet from the gas tank. Seems that most are in bad shape and unreadable due to exposure to the elements. Others have found copies stuffed up under the dash, or in the seat springs, and other places in the car. Other than finding one in your car or on your gas tank, I don't think you have many options for getting a copy.
Look on the top of your gas tank first. I was able to see mine (on a previous car) by removing the gas door and trim and pulling back the rubber surround - it was on the left side. If you can confirm it's there, you will have to drop the tank to get it off. On my current car, I found the build sheet stuffed in between the tach and the speedo on the top side - I had to take the drivers side instrument panel down to remove it - couldn't have reached it from below. I've also heard of some finding copies under the jack and under the seats - you never know how lucky you may get!
Like everyone said, most of the time it is stuck on top of the gas tank. I just pulled mine down and found the tank to be a replacement.. so no sheet for me. I did hear of the build sheet being found in weird places. Good luck and let us know what you find! :D
Hi
If you can't find the original one on top of the tank or anywhere inside the car, you can just collect as much info about your car as possible. Original colour and interior are found on the drivers side door front post, hinge area.
VIN number on drivers side window post ( visible from outside ).
If it's a numbers matching engine, you can find lots of info on the engine stamp pad. Same with rear end, options and so on.
You can get a fake window sticker made up for show use. Of course this is not any proof of originallity, but looks good. Just like the original.
The company reproducing this is called TRIPLE A ENTERPRISES.
You can find them under WINDOWSTICKER.com
Good luck
