Hi all,
After taking down the gas tank I found some white chalk markings. They are on the fiberglass panel that makes up the interior back wall where the convertible folds down. See picture.... what does 248 mean?????
It's not an option code in the Black Book but perhaps part of your VIN so they know what body went with what frame? Or maybe the Job Number which tied to the build sheet?
I looked everywhere.... books, online..... SOMEONE HAS TO KNOW WHAT THIS is FOR! It does not match my VIN. It is like a piece of history.... someone in 1970 put this on the car for a reason... I was just curious why???
They are referred to as "sequence numbers" or "job numbers". You will see one on the floor of my car in this picture as well. The numbers along the frame refer to shim sizes for the body mounts.
Binnie, is that a new firewall you have there? I can see rivets all around that area. Mine is cracked and I need to install one. Did you do this? How much is involved on the topside?
Thanks for the info on the markings!
That is the job number. They seem to start over evry 500 cars in sync with the last three numbers of the V.I.N. .. ****239 or ***739 vin's would both have 239 job numbers but there have bee a few that are one number off for some reason.

As others and Silvervetteman state, this is certainly the job number. The job number MAY correlate with the VIN, as they do on my 72, but there are numerous examples where they are close but not the same. I think Juliet's web page had some of the repsonses from folks who found the job number and correlates them to the VIN.

Another idea might be the julian date?? Does this correspond in any way?
No, absolutely no bearing on the julian date.
The job number is well documented on various NCRS cars and is clearly just an assembly line item to match compenents. That is job number 421 USUALLY comes after job 420 and before 422. I have the job number under the head liners of both T tops, in the same position as the photo in question, on the right side of my transmission tunnel in the interior, and under the carpet in the rear of the car. I have these photos documented with a digital camera and since my job number is 421, the car was built November 3, and the fact that there ain't no 421st day, the job number has no bearing on the date.

No, that is original, I just cleaned it up, the rivet heads were protected over the years with oil and grease.
O.K. guy's.... My 69 has 129 all over the place, rear filler, behind the seats, and a few other places. My tank sticker has 129 written on it. My v.i.n. ends in 129 so I feel confident in Juliet's research data.
Some shuffling may have gone on at the factory between the job numbers and when the VINs got slapped on the bodies. The way some of the guys who worked at these plants explained the process to me I can't see how they would be absolutely correlated - however there does seem to be quite a bit of evidence that the numbers are loosely correlated with the VIN. The '70 Registry has a bunch of numbers / build sheets etc from various shark owners. If anyone has any new stuff they would like to add - please send me the information and I'll add it to the database. Just so you know, I'm hopelessly behind updating the registry so it's likely to be at least a month before I get it online (just so you don't think I'm ignoring you or don't appreciate the info.)
