Default fuel gauge woes

when i fill my tank completely, then start the engine, my gauge shows just over 1/2 way between 3/4 and full.
i drive the short distance home, switch off, then check again later it's still the same
i then disconnect the battery switch and leave the car for a week
if i then turn on battery switch and the the ignition, the gauge now shows full/just over

any ideas what this problem is?
seem to read ok/accurately the rest of the time

it's no biggie just curious

thanks

Clean all the electrical connections back at the tank sender and see if that helps.

Hi rr au,
I've noticed a similar reaction since I've replaced my sending unit.
It seems like when adding gas the float doesn't come all the way to the surface right away. It stays partly submerged, and then slowly makes it's way to the top surface of the gas.
I thought I had a bad float.... maybe this problem is more common?
Regards,
Alan

could that maybe mean the float is leaking and is contains fuel??
and therefore not as buoyant ....
as far as i know it looks like it's still the original sender unit
will check the wiring at the weekend

thanks

When the car is reading 3/4 to full, pull the ohms wire off the sending unit and take a reading. You would have about 67-70 ohms +/- if it was a sending unit (float) failure.

If the problem is the float or sender you'll have that reading. If the problem is something else you'll have 90 +/- ohms.
