Default Steering Column question 1980

Under the big spring is the "LOCK" plate, under that is a small, heavy spring, under that is some kind of spacer/bushing...same diameter as the heavy spring. Anybody know what that is called, mines worn and needs replaced, but I can't find it on any of the part house web sites.

Upper bearing inner race seat.

These are the next parts after the cancelling cam and the heavy small spring.

Like Jim said, the big spring rides on the race of the upper bearing. I wonder if the column was put together wrong at one time and the plastic part is what is seen in figure E-3 below. There are two plastic spacers that sandwich the rubber spacer. Does your plastic part look like that?

I don't even have the plastic part here. Your picture "J-1" shows the black metal locking mech, with a plastic insert of some sorts....that is one of the things that are missing. And, as Jim mentioned, (thanks, Jim) the UPPER BEARING INNER RACE SEAT is also worn. Does Wilcox have these parts? Also, I love the actual pics you sent. Do they have a book I could purchase? I have a HAYNES Manuel and it is a joke.

This paper does not have a bunch of pictures but it has a pretty good description of the locking plate removal process and other upper end service operations. It is T&T Disassembly & Repair Paper #1.

Hi Jim-

I talked to him on the phone this morning. I still can't tell what he is looking for. It sure sounds like the upper bearing race, but he is sending me a picture by email.

I showed him the picture below (should have posted it last night) and he said it didn't look like what he had????

Ernie
