I recently purchased a '68 Convertible off ebay, that is basically a barn find (not regularly driven since '87). It needs a lot of work, but one of the first things I need to do is get the seats out so I can work under the dash (and work on the seats).
The seat tracks are rusted in the all the way back position, so I do not have access to the rear bolts. I am thinking I will have to drill them out from underneath, but does anyone have an easier/clever suggestion?
Get some WD-40 or similar and spray the tracks and sliders. Take your time. The seats will eventually free up and you'll be able to get to the rear bolts.
Beats the heck out of trying to drill Grade 8 bolts from the bottom.
I sprayed PB Blaster down the rails and back and forth under the passenger seat, and did the same with Liquid Wrench on the driver's seat. Not sure how well it hit the rails, but I thought it would be interesting to see if one worked better than the other.
After a couple days soaking, the drivers (Liquid Wrench) side slid forward enough for me to get a socket on the back bolts. I had to use a pry-bar and some pieces of wood between the rear bulkhead and seat, but the seat is out.
The passenger (PB Blaster) seat still will not move, so I hit the whole area again with Liquid Wrench.
A very unscientific test, obviously, but I am happy I did not have to drill out the bolts. Did not think it would work, so thanks for the suggestions everyone.
