Had my '68 convertible a year now. Still fixing problems. This week I want to repair or replace the ammeter. It's never worked in the year I've owned the car. There is power from the horn relay and power coming up from the starter.
Haven't pulled the center dash apart to look at the gauge but pulled the side panel and panel in front of the passenger seat to have a look. Conection looks ok. Can the gauge just go bad? All the rest of the gauges work good except of course the clock.
Advise??

To Bench Test:
Connect ground to top post and momentarily apply 12 volts to bottom post - needle should deflect downward.

There is a fusible link located near the distributor by the firewall which will render the guage inoperative if it fries. Everything else (to the best of my knowledge) will still work. Here's a picture, it's the orange wire. You can see mine is clearly fried.
