Default Need casting number expert!

Hello! Im from Norway and kinda new in the SB V8 world.
Im building a Volvo with a Chevy 350 ive got from a friend :-)
Now, ive taken of the heads and measured bore and it comes out to 10,16cm or 4" in american. That means its a 350? Ive also removed the pan and found out that it is a 2 bolt engine. Ive got some numbers from it and i need some help determing what it is. So far i think its a 74 Vette 350 2bolt 195hp, but im i right?

Engine:
GM 3970010 (K12) in front: K0816CMR

Heads:
Left: 3947041 GM
A3 9 7
Right: 3947041 GM
L30 8 7

Manifold/intake:
346250 GM

I also found a Carburator, but i dont think it have been used on this?
Carter AFB (Aluminium four barrel) 3F4 9635S
Think its a 625cfm? Same as a Edelbroch 1406?

And i bought a intake i can maybe use for it?
14007378 GMcm

For all help i am thankful And sorry for the poor english :-(
Cheers Allan

Hi Allan,
WELCOME!!!!!
I 'googled' 'chevy engine cmr' and found lots of information.
Yes, the 4" bore 010 engine is a 350, and '74 is one of the possibilities.
Perhaps someone else can help with some of the other numbers.
Regards,
Alan

This site should tell you everything you want to know about the casting numbers

http://web.archive.org/web/200805070...m/location.htm

I couldnt find a site on identifying the carb.

CMR is a 1974 350 chevy passenger engine 145 hp with turbo hydramatic transmission behind.

Heads are 1970 350 300 hp heads (depends on valve size)

PS: your English is better than you think

14007378 GMcm

K0816CMR
K= engine was built by McKinnon Industries in St. Catherines Ontario Canada

0816= engine built August 16th

CMR= this code was used three times, one of which was in a Corvette but no Corvette engines were built at the McKinnon plant. CMR was used in the same year (1978) in Camaros, all of which were built near me in St. Therese Quebec Canada along with the Firebirds. That's my guess where your the block came from, 220HP, 4 bolt. Nice.

The heads 3947041 were used only in 1968-70, yours were cast January 3 1969 (A3 9) and October 30 1968 (L30 8 ) 1.94" and 1.5 " valve diameter.

346250 intake was used from 1976 through 1982 for all sorts of 305 and 350 cu in Chev. engines, but not Corvette.

14007378 was used on '79 L2 Corvette.

The carburetor was not original to the engine possibly not on any GM car.

What the casting date of the block? Should be at the back on the drivers side.

Original post says it's a 2 bolt.

I cant seem to find the casting date stamp. The only numbers sitting where the casting date should be is K 12. But i have some numbers behind the flywheel 13 and 010.
Now to the good part! Ive actually got out of bed before wandering of to work i took a quick round on the block with a steel brush.
DAM DAM DAM DAAA! I found the VIN number! :-D it wasnt easy to see. kinda faded out and i had to scratch away som layers of block color to see it. VIN: 14T108800

But that means im back to being sad again :-P cause when i decifered that it means i have what Hammerhead Fred said in the first place.
1 = chevy 4= 74 cause of the Suffix: CMR and it was assembled in Tonawanda.

I found this over at Nastyz28
http://www.nastyz28.com/sbchevy/sblock.php#cdate

Your K 12 looks to me to be part of your casting date. I think there should be one more number there.

Casting Date
Small block casting date is located on driver side rear of block on flange forward of bellhousing. Big block on the right side of engine above the oil pan rails.

Casting Date Example: E038 - (E = Month, 03 = Day, 8 = Last digit of model year (1978)).

Month: A = Jan, B = Feb, C = Mar, D = Apr, E = May, F = Jun, G = July, H = Aug, I = Sep, J = Oct, K = Nov, L = Dec

I checked for a last number aroundt K 12 there but found nothing. But i found the Vin number 14T10880 and i think that rounds up all i need to determine what engine it is?

The K12 is more confirmation that this engine was built at McKinnon along with the K at the beginning of the engine machine code mentioned above.

McKinnon engines do not have the casting date in the same location as the Flint and Tonawanda engines. so more searching will be required.
With the VIN derivative indicating '4' before the car assembly plant it does come back to the A body built in 1974. T would indicate the Tarrytown NY assembly plant. Not sure which A bodies were built there. Sorry for the red herring on the 'four bolt' and Z28.

The model number (9635S) indicates this is an aftermarket 625 cfm model designed to be used on Chevrolet platforms with EGR requirements.

The date code (3F4) breaks down to the 3rd week of June 1994. (I'm guessing at the actual year. It could be 1984, but I know that Carter made aftermarket AFB's through 1998.)

The electric choke Edelbrock 1406 Performer 600 cfm AFB does not have EGR provisions, but is similar in design.

thats okey ;-) So what i got is from a A body. Thats a mid-size vehicle? Malibu, Chevelle, impala right?
Anyone tuned this engine before? is it any good? Worth spending some bucks on? Or should i go out looking for other V8?

Yes, midsize car. The code told you what configuration the engine was originally built for. Obviously the heads and intake have been swapped, who knows what's been done inside. No way of knowing without taking it apart.

If you don't need EGR, you can block it off. BTW, I found a better AFB guide online. (The manufacturer, Federal Mogul, refers to your model AFB as "emission calibrated" rather than "EGR compatible".)

You have what's known as a spreadbore intake. The other is called a squarebore which has the same size holes at all 4 corners. A squarebore carb will not fit a spreadbore intake without an adapter to change the bolt pattern.
