Default Teach me about 5pt harnesses

I'll turn a double post into a thread I can hopefully learn something in.

I'm going to get a shark bar this winter and want a 5pt harness.

Seems like when you look on a site like Jegs they have hundreds of different ones... Lengths, end type, latch mechanism.....

What would take the place in my 69? For a reasonable price that looks cool?

I am currently looking for a six point harness.

There are two types, latch and cam lock. My personal preference is cam lock.
So I am thinking of:

http://www.racerpartswholesale.com/p...mLockHarnesses

I have a rollbar in my car and the two shoulder harnesses will be mounted around the bar. I am not sure where you can mount yours. The 5th belt is the anti submarine harness.

Before you buy this, you may want to consider mounting points.

what's the benefit of 6pt over 5pt? other than the smartazz answer of 1 extra point.

I guess I'm not looking for what is safer as 5/6pt is going to be far more safe than 0 or 2pt.

So I'm more looking for ease of putting it on and comfort.

Properly installed, a genuine 6-point can be fitted much more snugly without causing discomfort or injury to gentleman's parts IMHO, and thus do it's job as an anti-submarine device better. Over the years I've put both to the test a few times, and I much prefer a real 6-point.

Remember, when you get serious enough to actually need a safety harness you ought to be strapping in as if you intend on crashing.

The Sharkbar comes with brackets that mount to the front seat bolts.

I used the factory lap belt hard points.. They worked great... I then used a large eye bolt and chain from the floor aft of the seat... The chain allows more adjustment... I would NOT do this in a plane because of spinal injury in a hard vertical crash.... When I get a "Sharkbar" or something similar the shoulder belts will be attached to them of course...

You may need to change the drivers seat to a racing style that allows the shoulder bents to go through the seat rather than spreading them out going around the stock seat (this could result in collar or rib cage injuries in the event of a hard frontal crash).

The anti submarine part of a six point belt wraps around the upper inner thigh vs straight up the crotch on a 5 point mount. Again, a racing seat will have a slot in the bottom cushion to keep things snug. The last thing you want is to get momentum before you hit the belts. This also may require you to fab a mount under the seat that is tied into the frame. /:\

I had 6 point G-Force harnesses in my M3. The lower 2 points I was able to use the existing front seat mount bolts. . If I did a 5 point harness, I would have to engineer a middle brace and mounting point. I'm sure the vette would be the same.
Situated right, a 6 point is far more comfortable for men. Also make sure you get a cam-lock as it is much easier to use than a sprintcar style.

Some SFI belts have a 4 year rating some have two. Some have the over the shoulder ends for single or dual bar bolt mount pounts. Some over the shoulder loop around the bar.

The floor mount point is easy. drill a hole and place two inch washer underneath

One other thing to think about is the mounting system. Some have a Clip in system that lets You install and remove them in minutes. Any system that uses Eye Bolts as the mounts are going to rattle and drive you nuts in a street car. I have found that the simplest ones seen to work the best. My Simpsion Belts are black to match my Interior but there Black is not as Black as my interior.

I like the 3" shoulder belts(pull downs) and 2" lap belts. Holds tighter IMO.

I'll buy this today:

http://www.apexperformance.net/CartGenie/prod-896.htm

BTW: Specify pull up or pull down to tighten the belts.
gkull is correct to point out, for racing, like helmets, the seatbelt have a limited life.
5 Years with the FIA label which I believe the GFORCE Pro's have (link above)
2 years without the FIA rating.

I assume you run the car in events, so this would be important.

No matter what brand/style you have, NHRA will only allow 2 years on belts. They almost wouldn't let me run my car at Route 66 this last summer for NCCC convention. But I showed them the expiration date and the "let me slide" since i was only going to be doing drags once.

I have an older G-Force 5 point with the cam lock in my 73 right now. I just run the belts over the top of my seat, but I know this is not Ideal. I have a set of racing style tuner seats to go in once i get around to fabbing up some brackets. The rears I drilled a hole through the bulkhead behind the seat and put some backing plates both front and rear. The lap belts I used the existing seat belt mounts. For the sub belt, there is a rib that runs under the front of the seat. I drilled through that and put a bolt there.
