Default Erratic oil gauge

69 with 454 12.1 compression, zl-1 cam, stock GM pan, pump, pcv valve and breather. Pressure is fine at idle and at high speed, once in a while whether at idle or cruising the gauge needle bounces erraticly. Once when parked it happened and I pulled the pcv valve and needle on gauge stopped bouncing. The pcv valve when in the valve cover was opening and closing as fast as the gauge was bouncing, tried new pcv valve and same problem. Any ideas on where to troubleshoot next?

Is the valve cover opposite the PCV vented in some manner?

I'm betting you have an oil pressure sending unit creating the bouncing gage when the pressure gets lower. When you pulled the pvc the idle went up slightly I bet. When that happened you got enough added oil pressure to satisfy the oil sender.
Mine is an electric sending unit and does that allot, I have a new one but haven't changed it yet.

It might be on it's way out if it's doing that cruising, mine does it then also.

Yes breather on passenger side valve cover. Oil pressure gauge is stock mechanical gauge no sender.

You know, I had that problem with my '72 smallblock (ZZ2), but it was because I let the oil get low....
