The radio and 8 track tape player are both functional on my 78, however the volume is not as loud as I would like it. On full volume setting its still very quiet, so much that you can not hear it when driving with the windows down.
Do these radios/cars have internal amps in them to help with volume?
Any help is appreciated as I would like to keep the current radio- its all I need (except for more volume)
I'm fairly certain that the preamp and amp components in the '78-82 sound systems were built into the radio head unit. I do not believe they had a "convector" unit like the earlier C3 radios. You likely need to remove the radio head unit and have it repaired. If it is just a sound level issue, it is most likely that one transistor (or a transistor pair) is defective [final amp stage]. That's a pretty simple fix for a repair guy.
i have the same issue only mine is the am/FM/CB unit and it will probably cost more than a nice modern unit to fix and still sound like crap.gets your top flite certification then pitch that garbage!
If you guys are going to get rid of your radios, I am looking for an original faceplate and all the original ***** for a 1978 Vette. If you still want to get rid of yours, please let me know. Thanks.
