Just dropped my trans (M22). The front shaft is leaking around the bearing retainer. The inside of the bellhousing is coated with gear lube - a minor amount dripped from the bellhousing and bottom of the trans. I understand that there is no front seal. What are the proper steps to take to make sure there are no leaks?
PS - I am buying a new bearing retainer and gasket.
If the transmission is overfilled, you might get oil out of the front bearing. There is no seal there, just an "oil slinger", that is supposed to throw any oil back into the trans.
More likely, your rear main engine seal has failed, and it's motor oil in the bellhousing, not gear oil. Once 10W30 mixes with clutch dust, it smells just as bad.
I've read articles which state a common problem is the oil slinger being installed backwards. They may look right but actually be reversed. Do a search on Muncie transmission oil leaks. Other common spot is the counter shaft. I haven't seen an easy solution for that one.
If it were oil from the rear main I wouldn't expect oil on the front of the tranmission. Certainly all around the inside of the bell housing, spun out by the flywheel. Good idea to check it anyway while you're in there.
Yep, might do the clutch as well while I am in there. There was no oil on the end of the countershaft - it had a silicone lid. I'll be re-doing that. The oil smells like trans fluid. Also there is no oil coming from the engine side, it is all from the trans side. I've been doing some reading today. I'll tackle my issue this coming weekend. Thx for the reply.
Make sure it's not coming from around the cluster gear pin just below the front bearing retainer. Over time that hole will egg shape and leak a little. If that's it a steel slevve can be fitted and end that forever.
Thx Indiancreek. That was dry. After pulling the retainer off last night, I see the oil slinger is broken - probably from installation by the previous owner. Looks like I'll need a few parts!
Gary,
You will need a new nut also. You must use a gasket behind the retainer for everything to work right. Let me know if you the special wrench for the nut.
Mike
Thx Mike, I'll take you up on the offer when I get the parts. Suggestion on who to buy these parts from? Anyone local? No hurry, I need to pull the scatter shield and clutch. Might as well replace all the pieces while I'm in there!
