Default Spark plug:

I am in the process of installing a pair of headers. Since I have the original manifolds off now,(waiting for the headers to arrive) I figured I might as well change the plugs since there real easy to change now. I took one out to see what I had = AC DELCO R45TS. should I replace these with another type? Hot/Cold. I know to gap them at 45. I have a 77 L-48 with advanced timing, dual exhaust, my carb. has been tuned, and breaths better.

Default Generally speaking...

Hotter plugs are best in a low compression / low performance engine to burn off combustion deposits.
Cooler plugs are better in high compression / high performance engine.

Also, any advantage of running the wires on top? I prefer to keep them hidden like the factory. But I see so many replacing the long one's with short one's running on top.

Hey Dave. R45TS are the correct ones. On the wires I think it will depend on the clearance you will have between the wires and the ends of the wires. They get real close on some of the cylinders. I am sure someone will have pics. mike...

R45TS with a gap of .045 is the right plug

Thank you guys. I just took the shields off that covered the plugs. I was going to clean them up. Put got to thinking, I don't remember seeing any with headers. Do you leave them off when putting headers on? I assume they are there for protection from heat. So I would believe it's wise to place them back on. What are your thoughts on this?

Default Over the top!

You won't need the shielding with headers but save the pieces and the cast iron manifolds.
You may need it someday.
Two stock wires go through the boomerang on each side on a stock set up, it's a real test of ability and patience, I'm sure other will post some over the top suggestions.

Here's the stock set up

Enjoy!

If you put the plugs in before mounting the headers there is a chance you will break a plug....They are brittle.

I am running long headers on my 71 and have the wires running underneath. I used the factory looms but did not use any of the shields and I am not sure they would fit.

Getting the headers on was not at all hard. The hard part was getting the headers to connect to my exhaust. Post a few photos if you can I know you have done a lot of work on your car this year.

Myself and several other members I've seen have these overhead looms...

They are buggers to setup, but they work really well for holding your wires away from your primaries. I can post pics tonight if you'd like.

I have to agree with the over header wire looms since it is really close trying to go underneath with the factory set up with the way most header tubes are bent. I used some looms similar to the photo wcsinx posted since they follow the base of the valve cover which still looks clean.

If you need a hand give me a call.

Under the headers for me using the "V" shields...
(Over the headers brackets always seem to get in the way and sometimes cut your hands.
