Default Spring plate came off Distibutor shaft...

The spring plate (didn't know what else to call it) came off the top off my distributor shaft on my 73. Is it possible to get this thing lined up and timed properly without a machine or should I just buy a new shaft? (I'm afraid if I do its gonna snowball into another $250 project like every other seemingly small problem goes). I figured I could weld it back on if I could get it timed right.

That piece should be silver soldered to the shaft. I had the same thing happen. I took it to a friend of mine who makes his own jewelry. After carefully lining up the shaft and plate by realigning the surface markings from how they separated, it took about 10 minutes to get the job done. If you remove the shaft and clean it and the plate well, you could probably take it to any jewelry store and get it silver soldered.

I've had no performance issues with the dizzy since the repair.

Silver solder is harder than lead solder; it will flow easily into the joint between the shaft and plate to fill it completely; there won't be any 'lumps' of weld material anywhere on the part. You could weld it, if that's really your only option. I think it was originally brazed (which is soldering using a brass medium).
