I always used a Hudson pump-up sprayer (like for weed killer - get one at Home Depot) full of water and while the car was idling, sprayed the radiator with a cool mist for a few minutes. If you're concerned about spots on your engine chrome, don't do this! It really throws a bit a spray all around, as you can imagine - but it did the trick for me.

On the GTO I used to race, I had an electric fan mounted on the front of the radiator. it was hooked to the key (it also had a seperate switch to de-activate it entirely), so I'd just pull into the lanes and put the key in accessory and the fan would cool down the radiator while I waited. Worked for me.
