But after trying Fatmat and three different exhaust configurations, I discovered another way to reduce noise and drone. My local Ace Hardware is going out of business, so I bought 12' of this foam heater pipe insulation. I've always wanted to pad my four point roll bar, so I did. WOW! What a difference. I can have a discussion at 85mph now. I had no idea that the roll bar was bringing so much noise into the cabin. I guess it was acting like a stethescope. One big drawback, I drive and shift by ear sometimes. What seems like 65mph is actually 85mph now. I've caught myself speeding several times when I was just cruising. No wonder I was passing everyone. This will only work for those of you with a roll bar.

Just read the thread on the 914, damn that sucks! Since you've put so much into it, I think I would definitely have to rebuild it. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you that USAA will come through for you.
It is good to see you posting again. Your stethescope analogy is probably correct. The rollbar has to be attached to the frame to do its job. It makes sense that it would be singing/ringing with lots of noise and bringing it right in to the cabin.
Did you try putting Fatmat right on the rollbars? Another idea would be to stuff something into the rollbar, kinda like putting a pillow into a base drum.
I had a 72 914 that i drove into the ground. Loved that car. first car that i had to pull the seat forward to push the clutch in all the way. I miss it...

sorry to hear about your 914. Man, that sucks.
I would have never guessed that the roll bar on your vette would resonate that much. Then again I did not know you had a roll bar.
Glad you are okay.
