Insurance RANT/need help
OK I am in the service. So I don't exactly have the most orthodox living arrangements. I want to insure my vette, I cant get hagerty cause I don't have a garage. So that sux right there. Now since I store it in NY 6 mnths out of the yr, I can't put it on my policy in VA. But since it is not going to be in VA 10 mnths out of the year they cant write a policy on it. So its probably going to be the same as NY. I cant afford to insure it, AND pay for storage. Now when its in storage, I still have to carry liability on it. OK its on the second floor of a barn on car stands in a controlled enviroment. So if I insure it, in NY I cant have it here in VA. and If I can't insure it in VA if i cant store it in NY. So right now its boiling down to the fact that insurance hates people in the army, and I cant drive my vette. once I get it fixed
Jake
Do you qualify for USAA insurance? They started their business serving military customers...and you still must be active, retired, or dependant military to qualify.
Where is your permanant address? Guessing VA. Out in AZ I'm with American Family (not in your area) and there policy is based on the state the vehicle is registered in REGARDLESS of where the car actually is!! If I have the vette registered in AZ at my perm address and spend 10 months traveling to shows with it trailered. The car is covered as if it never left AZ.

Re: Insurance RANT/need help (wireless guy)
Well I called the insurance agent. As long as I have 2 cars, and 1 in is NY at all times, then there is no issues. So I can switch out cars, and drive the vette 6 months and then the Cavalier 6 months. and my insurance will be lower, no VA taxes and such. Yeah me. But I am gonna try and call the NY DMV and see if even all that is necessary. Cause that is the only way to keep it registered in NY I guess I also need to talk to a JAG officer. get it all straight.
Jake, I'm in the same boat being in the Coast Guard and living in NY with both of my vehicles registered in Michigan. I have to register them both in MI because I'm not a NY resident (which is good cause MI is cheaper and has no emissions tests :D ) but I have to pay the higher NY insurance rates since I'm perminently stationed in NY. I use USAA for my Blazer and was using them on the Vette too, both had really good rates too. I recently switched the Vette to Hagerty and got it down to $251/year with guaranteed value set at $15000, much better than I got with USAA.
USAA has pretty good rates, but they suck big time when it comes time to pay you for you totalled vehicle. I found this out the hard way last summer after some A**hole in an Astro van ran a stop sign and t-boned me in my GMC Jimmy. USAA sent a claims adjuster out (3 F'in weeks after the accident :mad ) and then he proceeded to deduct every possible thing he could (even stuff that was caused in the accident) by the time it was over I almost owed them money for my totalled truck! :mad I ended up getting a lawyer and he went right to the other guys insurance company (progressive) and they gave me what the truck was worth and did it in a timely manner. What a PITA!
So if you do go with USAA you'll like the rates you get (and their banking is the best there is PERIOD!) but I hope you never get some A**hole to wreck ya cause they'll try to give you the shaft when it comes time to pay up.
AAHHH.......I feel a little better! Anyway good luck buddy!
I have insured 18 cars through USAA over the last 17 years.
The only car I did not insure with them was my '77 Vette when I was 20 years old (1987) because they wanted too much money.
I think they are great and the pay off claims in a matter of days (in my case anyway). Their rates may seam higher up front, however, you always get a decent refund check at the end of the year.
And, try to get "Wage Earner Disability" with another agency!!! GOOD LUCK!

Jake,
Hate to say this but it looks to me as if they are trying to find a reason to not insure you. Seems they are coming up with anything and everything to avoid writing a policy. :(
