Default steering gearbox removal

My power steering manual gear box has slop in the shaft and needs to be changed out.
My question is... Do I have to remove the Pittman arm from the gear box shaft while it is in the car.
Or
Can the gear box be pulled from the car and the Pittman arm separated from the unit on my work bench?

Yes, you can pull the steering box with the pitman arm attached. Worked out better for me back in April when I did the rebuild.

How have you determined that there is slop in the box? And, if it is "sloppy" equally, across the entire steering range, you can fix that with the adjustment nut on top of the box.

The only correct way to adjust your steering gear box is to remove it from the car and use an inch-lb torque wrench to set the input shaft wrom bearing adjuster and then the sector shaft lash adjuster screw with the gear on-center.

Complete instructions are available in the Chevrolet Chassis Service Manuals. The following is a scan:

Having said the above, it is possible to obtain a reasonable adjustment (or at least determine where the lash is occuring) with the gear in the car. Here is a Microsoft Word paper on the subject.

You must always set the sector shaft adjustment with the gear exactly on center. (There is lash in the sector shaft gears off center as they were manufactured. If you try to eliminate the off-center lash, you can damage the gearset when the gear comes back to center.)

If you want your gear rebuilt, I would suggest contacting Gary Ramadei. He is available through other Corvette websites.

The slop in my gear box is out put shaft moves side to side. I think the bushing is wore out.

How hard is it to remove the other end of the Pittman arm from the power steering unit?
Is it a taper fit, like the other end on the out put shaft? Or is it a keyed / machined fit?

Thanks for the help guys, This sure makes my life a lot easier

Gary Ramadei rebuilt/blue printed my OEM box last October, and yes Jim, he told me that more damage is done by people thinking that they can "adjust" the steering play out of the box with the adjustment nut-leave it alone-if you don't know what you are doing!

The rebuilt/blueprinted hand adjusted OEM box that I reinstalled was so much better than the factory built box it was incredible-it was that much better! The steering has good feel, is ultra responsive, and has zero play now. Gary is very reasonable with his prices as well for the amount of work that he puts into a rebuilt OEM box!

Every single other car I have-enough-has rack and Pinion steering and I have no desire to change my C3 steering to some other type now.
