Default crankshaft timing gear problem

here is the story, I'll try to keep it short. Timing mark was jumping around culprit was a loose timing chain. The crank gear would not come off. Had to get a gear puller to remove. When I got home with the new chain it was the same ammount of slack as old one. The timing gear will slide until about a half in to block then stops. You can feel where the crank has a little bit bigger diameter than the end. I have nver seen this before, but i was always a mopar guy. Is this typical for a 350? Does this gear need to be pressed on? Any suggestions would be great.

Yes the gear is a press fit on the crank.

use a short length of thick walled pipe larger than the diameter of the crank to press the gear on, unless your puller can also be used to install.

Put the crank gear in the oven at 350* for about 30 minutes. Wear gloves and slip it on the crank, follwed with a pipe that fits over the crank and a couple of whacks with a hammer to seat it. Works everytime and is not so hot it messes with the gear. Make sure you get it oriented correctly- the rear has a chamfer and the timing mark is on the front.

So why put if back on if it has the same slack? Are you changing both, the chain and both pulleys?
