Default What headers for an '81?

I am wanting to remove the stock exhaust manifold and put on a set of headers. The motor is stock other that the Edelbrock carb/intake and a MSD dizzy. I am looking for a set that will fit nicely and hold up for several years. Any suggestions?

Thanks - Jared

Are you speaking of Flowtech 31106 Ceramic headers? They seem relatively inexpensive compared to the other brands. Is this just typical branding? Did you run ceramic or painted?

I just installed these with out any trouble or dents!

or you could just buy "Hooker Super comps for $695 and get the same performance on the street as the less expensive ones.

Yes, I rec. ceramic coated & they are as good as Hooker Super Comps. Painted cost less.
If you need headers for air tubes for emissions, Hedman has them.

Thanks Guys! I live in Ohio and emissions are of no concern. I want to continue removing all the emissions stuff and this will be the final piece of the puzzle. Jeg's has the ceramic Flowtech 31106 headers in stock and priced at $265. I am 30 minutes from 1 of their retail stores and will probably be buying these. I am concerned with removing the 30 year old manifold bolts. I had an intake bolt snap off this weekend trying to pull the stock intake for my new Edelbrock. I reckon these bolts will be a nightmare!

+1 vote for Summit Headers. Paid $99 new ... and installed without ANY modification. Easy as pie.

Terry
FYI, those shorties which are not close to equal length, are probably not better than ramshorn manifolds. "1928-1934 cars"

I just clicked on the link above, at least they look a lot better than the old antique Rams horn cast iron boat anchors. Good luck guys. Oh, by the way, the 81 already has the tube style manifolds, similar to the link above. Al

The problem I have with the 3 bolt flange is when (noticed I didn't say "if") you bottom out, it ain't gonna be pretty. Good luck on getting that header to ever seal again. been there, done that.

Look at these Kooks headers (too bad they don't make 'em for C3's), and notice how smooth the transition from header to exhaust is:

I'm in the same boat as you guys, looking for headers for my C3. But I'm looking for one that has a robust interface between the header and exhaust. That's my main concern.

On the bolt removal... Spray on lube. Then tap end of the bolt. Then spray it the next day and tap it again... Do it for a couple days.

I found these awhile back doing a search:

http://www.corvettecentralexhaust.co...mance_dual.php

They are shorties, but if your looking to do the entire exhaust system, its not a bad deal

I soaked mine with PB Blaster for a couple of days and the bolts came right out.

I have this system on my '80, I'm pretty happy with it. Those Summit headers that TimH recomends look like a pretty sweet deal, too, but I wouldn't bother unless you went with at least a 2 1/2" dual exhaust sytem with some pretty free-flowing mufflers. We all know how TimH feels about Flowmasters, but I have Magnaflows (they came with the Corvette Central exhaust system) and I like 'em pretty well. Tim, why don't you re-post those pics of your header installation for the OP to see?

I may just go with the system you got. I've got longtubes on my firebird, and on the street, they have given me more than just 1 bad day with how low they hang. I think shorties are the way to go especially with low riders like vettes. I know we are leaving some power on the table, but I'd rather have that than the busted collector blues.

I've had the Summit headers on since March 2011 and they are real nice.

Just a small note there were papers in the box from Hooker Headers about the Summit Headers.

Are you going to run dual exhaust/ That's what I did.
They are a sweet setup. You will hot be sorry.
