I seriously doubt it will withstand the engine vibrations.....I had a problem with that years ago.....shattered the aluminum like a piece of glass, had to switch to steel....

But they're not made out of cast aluminum of dubious quality. They're made out of forged, heat treated 6061 T6 aluminum or similar. Unless they came from CHINA then all bets are off. BTW, I do cast my own lead bullets and have for over 30 years.

If you have 3/8" aluminum shattering like glass, you must have been using a VERY crappy alloy, or are putting way more strain on it than you should...

For the record, as it seems most of you guys don't know, almost all belt tensioners on modern vehicles are made out of cast aluminum. And almost all of them are made in china. I'll post back in a year or so with pictures of it holding up fine.

neuroclast,

Do you have picture of this on your car?
The exhaust manifold alternator mount on my 68 has broken. Bubba fixed it and while it is functional does not look good and the alternator "sits" funny. I’m looking for a solution short of buying another exhaust manifold or an aftermarket item that is out of place on my car.

What alloy did you use?
The first thing I thought of when I saw the pic was questionable strength, not so much because of the material, but the design.

Ummmm.........Bud2, I hate to have to be the one to tell you this, but this is the forum for Corvette automobiles, not Corvette lawnmowers!!! Haha, just kidding, Bud2 (If any of you don't understand this, don't worry about it, it's kind of an inside joke.)

As far as the alt bracket failing, just call it an experimental prototype under testing, and if it fails, well...... back to the old drawing board, I guess.

The original GM brackets were cast and of "dubious quality" and managed to last 30+ years.

My OEM alternator brackets are made out of steel. Not cast steel either, but punched from plate steel. Yours must be different.

C4 brackets are aluminum. So, maybe a bit less than 30 years.

My 1980 came with a cast aluminum bracket, but it was alot beefier than the OP's.

It wasn't under belt tension, but even being +1/8 inch thickness in the use, it shattered like glass under vibration, so I call up a M/E I used to work with/for and he said it was bound to happen....

so best of luck, All I know is I had the a/c comp bracket shatter and had to get my welder buddy to TIG it up again....'88 vette serp drive....
