Well Stingy - I always had a problem of breaking posi unit's before bit it was always while turning at WOT. Like on to an freeway on ramp. When you open up the case and look the posi pin first elongates the case hole then breaks the case housing. I have great faith in my slick tests and shifting above 7000 rpm.

As to Merlin - What's your SS# and i'd like to take out a big policy on you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Does your toms setup use the larger 12 bolt pin? I think they offer a service to make the hole round again and they use the bigger pin.

Stingy go to tom's web site and I have bought the larger pin polished case unit the last two. I also use synthic oil with ER additive and two tubes of posi lube. I have richmond 4.11 gears look new after 12 years and the custom yokes for @ $225 each. I have custom big tube half shafts with spicer U's. The rear frame has a gusseted kit with all the frame ground and rewelded and now roll bars welded to the rear frame in three places per side behind the drivers seat. The rearend is mounted with the poly bushing and HD cover. The Rear spring is @420 inch pound with Smart struts and poly 3/4 sway spaced down 1 inch. :) all that so nothing moves and tears up rearends like it used too!

I think stock cars use spools but for the street better with some hardcore posi.

Merlin. I must have been sleeping too. When did you get a Viper?

As for having too much power desk top dyno shows my 8-71 blown big block at 940HP. Combined with the 4.11 gears and street tires it is hard to drive. You will light the tires in the first 3 gears without effort and last year I lost it in 3rd and took 3 lanes slidding sideways. Also with that much engine if the rpm doesn't perfectly match the transmission speed it is a very jerky ride. Also if you get excited taking off or turning a corner you light up the tires. Even passing a car at 60 and crossing the yellow line under power can cause the rear end to kick out.
I now have a Tremec but had a 700R4 or rather 3 of them and the car was much more controlable but after regurlar failures I gave up on the 700R's. I just rebuilt my 4.11 rearend with huge axles. I want to remove them and replace with my old 3.08. 1st gear is just too low. I regularly take off in 3rd and like it alot better. I can cruise at 1400rpm in high gear at 30 mph and the motor doesn't seem to lug.
Merlin will find out that it isn't so easy to drive a standard with that much power. Monty with his turbo's and automatic will have the easiest time off the line. Blowers and biginch motors produce too much torque off the line and down low.
Yes you can have too much power but I won't give up a single horsepower. A simple pulley change will up that power but I am not ready for that either.

I'm certainly not in the position to talk about this (maybe in a years time), but I believe there's a limit to streetable power. Superchargers give you higher peak numbers AND higher torque throughout the rpm range, and I think they're the cats' meow. The problem is traction: control and related parts breakage. You have to consider every part of the system and upgrade accordingly.

Oh yeah, I think it was Mark Donohue (during development of the Porsche 917 Can-Am car in the early '70's) who said that he would be satisfied when he could spin the tires in top gear at the end of the straightaway. Blew the Porsche engineers' minds!

One reason I like bikes is that the power/weight ratio is so high and traction generally isn't that much of an issue because of today's rubber compounds. My GTA will spin the tires pretty easily if you punch it in 2nd gear at 20 mph but it's not that fast a car. Both of my bikes can scare the bejeezus out of me if I'm not careful but they're hard to spin the tires on.

If you ever do have that problem, I can offer an easy solution- Trade engines with me. :p: With my engine, you would have to put the car on jackstands to get wheel spin.
