vettedan - nice setup, I am looking to do the same thing as you. I have to cut my dash and I was wondering how I was going to get it to look good. where did you get that adaptor for the face and would it fit a 71 too?
Kevin
Go with aftermarket. Screw the original gauge panel too while you're at it. It was ugly in the first place.
Custom gauge and shifter panels by Campus Research Machine Shop, University of California at San Diego.
Gauges by Autometer.
My original radio (AM/FM stereo) worked, but what a god awful sound. My dash bezel was already broken at the tp, so I cut it for a DIN aftermarket Blaupunkt CD player. However, even with good speakers (4), The sidepipes pretty much make it useless. This is NOT a bad thing! :D
PS Mine looks just like vettedan's, except it's a Santa Monica...
blndweasel----- I like the CD player, I have the same one. As for the people who aren't sure about cutting the dash, you can always order a new center gauge cluster, they were about $125 last time I checked from a place like Eckler's, Zip, etc. When I finish mine (hopefully next week :yesnod: ) I will try and post pics.
As much as I like the stock look, I love good tunes. Great music and great cars go together. If done right, the newer head unit won't look totally out of place. And the sound from the new stereo will more than make up for the non-stock appearance.
Just make sure to eliminate the noise. I'm still working on this one...

    I prefer the original
Thanks for reminding me. The guy who owned the car before me, replaced the stereo with some horrible excuse for a stereo. The only good thing about the current stereo is that it fits correctly... that's about it. Otherwise, it's a POS! :cry :U
I've been wanting to replace it, but have decided to put on a flowmaster exhaust instead. I figured I'd just listen to that. :yesnod: :yesnod:
I went for the cut and put an Alpine in my 1980. The original speakers are still adequate. One bonus for me is that I can put off fixing the clock because the Alpine has one.
Digital tuning is great. I have the original radio on the shelf for the next owner.
