After 10 years of driving, my ride has developed some road rash cracks, mostly around the headlight openings. Nothing to serious, but it's enough to drive me crazy. I'm confident enough to fix the cracks but I need to know if it's possible to have the paint repaired without repainting the whole frinken car. The rest of the paint is still in very good overall condition. I took it to one shop but all I got was the royal run around that a total repaint was needed to fix these cracks. Cost: $6 to $10K. Any thoughts/experience with this??
Bad news...Your '72 was painted using acrylic lacquer from the factory. That type of paint has been regulated out of existence...at least here in the US. Trying to color match metallic silver with the newer catalyzed enamels and polyurethanes is a job most paint shops would rather pass on. Especially since metallic silver is one of the harder colors to do right. Plus, think of the little profit in painting/blending a few headlight surround cracks. Not worth the hassle of a dissatisfied customer when it doesn't match.
Good news...if you can still find some Steel Cities Grey acrylic lacquer, a proper repair is not impossible if the painter has the talent.
Click on 'forums' above, then 'general corvettes' from the drop down list, to 'paint/body.' Ask your question to the pro's there.
