Advice on hooking up passing gear linkage.....butthead that installed crate motor before I bought my vette did not hook it back up and of course I had vette stars in my eyes and I didnt notice it before i bought her. I would like to know if anyone might know how or a link to show me how to set it at when I put carb back on after a kit has been installed
Don't have an answer but I'm interested in reading your responses. My 76 L82 won't kick into passing at any speed. I have to pull it into second when necessary. Hoping some answers to your problem will enighten me alittle.
Assuming you have a TH350 trans, the downshift detent cable is the lower one connected to the carb throttle lever in the pic, behind the spring. It gets pulled out as the throttle opens. A key issue is the cable support bracket which bolts to the intake manifold. It is under the brake vacuum line in the pic. Hopefully you have one of those.
This is how the cable should look once installed. If it's just hanging around then you'll need to install it in the large square hole in the bracket attached to your intake manifold. Don't go by my bracket since I had to fabricate it in order to get my cable parallel with the intake.
Once you have the cable installed into the bracket you'll need to take a screw driver and slide the inner plastic piece upward (mines upside down due to my bracket) this will allow the cable to move back and forth. Now you can pull the cable forward and over the throttle arm on your carb using the back of the long slot on the cable to go over the linkage and then slide it back.
Plastic piece in open position
Now with the cable installed move the throttle to wide open throttle and the detent cable will move. While holding the throttle wide open use your other hand and press the plastic piece in the cable back down to hold the cable in place. Your all done.
You'll notice from the photo with the plastic holder pulled out the spring on the back of the cable is all the way to the back and now it is compressed.
