Default Bad Lifter? 82 Corvette

I have had a valve noise for some time. Its hard to describe. I thought maybe a rocker was loose. So I adjusted the side (passenger) I thought the noise is coming from. Oil seemed to come out fine on all valves except one. On the one the oil would come out steady, if you give it a bit of throttle the oil would shoot out 5 to 7 feet. Is this a sign of a bad lifter?

I'll second that, the factory rockers are not all that great. However, if your 82 is like mine, those injectors are LOUD. Did you use a piece of hose or some other "stethoscope" type deal to listen to the engine? That could eliminate injector clicking as your noise. I'm thinking Terry82's idea of going with new rockers is a good one. I may do that soon.

Thanks guys.

Its a strange noise. It sounds like a rattle. Only under load. It gets louder under excelleration but not more consistant....no rythme....just rattle. I call it chatter. Almost sounds like a ping from bad gas.

So I have one lifter that will shoot the oil 6-7 feet and all the rest just dribble out. Maybe its the other way around. One good lifter and 7 bad? So what does it look like when all is good. If I have the valve cover off and blip the throttle should all 8 shoot oil across the room with equal pressure?

I have checked the rockers for wear. They all seem good.

your push rods could be dirty .take one out and look at it could be plugged.the type of oil that you use can plug up a motor.Drawmain if you are looking into rollor rockers look for ones that will fit under factory valve covers or you will have to go to aftermarket tall ones.http://vettes.shutterfly.com/109

Any idea where I can get the ones that fit under the factory covers?

I don't think the push rods are clogged. I did change a couple of them and no difference. All squire out, but don't shoot out except for that one.

I can see them squire out in sequence with engine turning over. Just that one shoots out in a steady stream. The more gas you give it the longer the stream gets....doesn't seem right to me.

Ive heard that grinding off the drippers will get you clearance with the stock covers. Right now I'm looking at Comp's 1.52's Not full rollers, just roller tips. Haven't decided to pull the trigger yet. I've also heard double gasketing works on roller rockers.

i have seen both of those things working for you on the roller rockers .but it all depends on what you buy .if all you are buying is the roller tips .you should have no problem.the full rollers looked so good i did not want to cover them up with a valve cover.

I hear you on that, lol. The difference in price is not all that much, it seems. Did you replace the pushrods as well when you replaced rockers?

To the OP, I've never run the engine with the valve covers off without the deflectors on the rockers, so I have no idea how far the oil shoots, lol. It does seem to make sense that they should all shoot a similar distance tho, otherwise, what would be the point of the drippers on the valve covers?

no ,i used my old push rods they were straight .i would think the drippers are just to direct the oil from the pcv and the oil inlet.

Default Rocker arm

Is the push rod seat cracked in that rocker arm that shoots the oil?

Check for a stud pulled out of the head.
With the rockers off lay a strait edge across all of them and see if one is higher than the others.

I'm using an old set of valve covers with the centers cut out. The one in question shoots out of the cover, over my shoulder and hits the wall. Its shooting hard.
