I have been trying to get my engine to start up and stay that way. I have the fuel lines connected correctly and connected to the carb. I put gas in the carb and it will fire up for a few seconds and then die out. I pulled the lines and some gas fell out of the feed line at the fuel pump but it looked dry at the top of the hose when I disconnected it from the hard line and no gas is coming out of the carb when I hit the gas. It just burns whats in the carb and dies. Has anybody had this problem before and how in gods name do I fix it so I can break in my new motor.
Assuming this is a rebuilt motor, did the fuel pump rod longer bolt, used to hold it in place during pump install, get removed and replaced with the shorter bolt? This will prevent the pump from working if it is tight enough.

If it starts and runs, then we know the timing is in the ballpark and the carb is basically working - so I'd agree that the fuel pump pushrod would be the first check.
I didn't use a longer bolt to install it. the engine was out of the car when I did it so it wasnt too bad to get everything together. I guess I can pull it off and check it and reinstall it. can the fuel pump be bad enough that it wll no longer pump gas? It worked when I took it off of the car.
If you have not tried this, why pull the pump......... just remove the line to the carb and insert a bottle over it.....crank the engine and watch the fuel pump flow....... if there is any you should know right away which way to proceed........
Also check the rubber hose from the frame rail to the pump. There is a special molded S hose for that connection. If you try to use a regular hose here, sometimes it will collapse and prevent the fuel from getting to the pump.
It has a 3/4 tank of gas in the car but none is getting to the Carb. I put some in the carb to try and get it started but it doesn't seem to be pulling any through the lines
Pull the fuel line off of the pump inlet. Does anything run out?
If you have a good supply of fuel there you have a pump problem.
If nothing runs out there is likely a blockage upstream back towards the tank.

I had a little come out when I pulled the feed line. it was far from a good supply. I thought it was just some that trickled down from the carb or something when I was pouring the gas in. There was no gas at the top of the line when I pulled it off the feed hard line. I will try pulling the pump off and redoing it this weekend. If you guys have any more tips it would be appreciated. What hole do I put the long bolt in to hold the pumping ron in place during install?

Pretty sure with 3/4 tank of gas the level is much above the outlet point at the fuel pump. If fuel is not streaming out of the supply line to the fuel pump when you disconnect it, I would assume it is up stream from there where your problem is. Can you try some low pressure air and blow back into the tank from the connection at the fuel pump? If your filter is clogged, if you use to much pressure you might blow the filter off in the tank.
