Default Rear Bumper Mounting Question

Hello,
Just a bumper mounting question.
I removed the rear bumpers yesterday on my 68. The chrome is flaking.
Poor quality re-chrome sometime ago
I noticed there were no bolts on the outer mounting holes on both sides that secure the bumper end through the quarter panel.
The bolts look like they would secure the bumper ends directly to the fiberglass quarter panel.
I did not see any bracket? I can't believe you would mount steel directly to fiberglass with out any reinforcing bracket. I removed the other eight bolts with an "A" on them without any problems.
I guess, I'm 2 bolts short too?
Lastly, 2 of the bolts are longer than the other 6.
I tried to remember where I removed them from. Oddly enough they were in different places on the left and right sides so I do not know which hole requires the longer bolt? Last person didn't remember either I guess?
The holes in my quarter panels look a little over sized like the orig. bolts may have pulled through?
Any pics or help would be greatly appreciated. I can't see the end mounting position bolting directly to/through fiberglass with damaging the body.
Thanks,
This site has already been such a wealth of info.

There is a support from the frame to the bumper hole at least there is on 69 to 72. You need to get the assembly manual for a 68, there are some unusual and one year only thing on a 68.

Hi Marshall,
There was no bracket used for that outer bumper bolt through the 71 model year. I believe 72-73 model years had the bracket.
There's just a typical bumper bolt, lock washer, and flat washer against the fiberglass.
The flat washer was too big for the indentation in the body it was supposed to seat against so it often crunched the fiberglass a little bit.
Restorers sometimes grind two 'flats' on the washer so it seats properly.
Regards,
Alan

Thank you so much.
Follow up question:
Will a '72 support fit '68's
I like the washer mod you suggested, Alan.
Thank's that's what I'm going to do to reinforce the panel.
Does anyone know where the longer bolt goes in the rear bumper?
Does this longer bolt even belong in the rear bumper?
It has an "A" on it so I figured it was right/orig.????

On my 69 I reinforced that area with fiberglass mat. I don't know why a 72 support would not work, you probably have to drill a mounting hole in the frame.

On my 73, there is a round, rod brace that runs from the corner of the frame to the end of the bumper. As far as the length of the bolts.... trial and error.
