I had the heater core changed on an 1982 corvette, 32k miles. It blows very cold. Today the a/c was making a squealing noise when on. The noise seemed less when engine rm.'s were increased. Is it a belt?
Someone referred that there is oil in the compressor? As you can see I am a novice.
Does it make the noise when the ac is off engine running? The pulley runs on a bearing which over time, will fail. This bearing runs all the time the engine is running. The electromagnetic clutch connects the compressor crankshaft to this always running pulley only when ac is selected. If the noise is only there when ac is selected, the bearing is okay.
To check for slipping belt run the engine with ac and let it squeel. Shut the engine off and feel the pully where the belt rides. If it's hot the belt is slipping making the noise. (compare the feel to other pulleys on the engines if you're not sure how warm it should be).
It's highly unlikely the noise is internal to the compressor and if it is it's past the point of adding oil. Even to ad oil requires either injection of oil under pressure or an evacuation, fill, and recharge.
