I need some advice. Going on the theory that some protection is better than none, I want to get a detector mainly for my daily driver, and to also use in the Corvette.
Now, I don't drive WAY over the limit.:blueangel: Here in So. Fla. just keeping up with traffic is 15 MPH over the posted limit. :yesnod:
Other than the Valantine 1 and the Escort 8500 ($400 and $300), is there a decent "working mans price" detector out there???
I was looking at Cobra's new 9120 at Costco for $89.
Any other suggestions?
Check out http://www.heartlandamerica.com and look for the Phantom....It's both a radar/laser detector and active jammer (I think it's active, but it's probably PASSIVE just to make a liar out of me...LOL)
It's like $299.00 or something like that, I'll dig out a catalog tomorrow if I can't get to it tonight and give you better numbers.....
Honestly, for the "working man", I would go on eBay and get one of the Escort Passports that are for sale there. Get a model 4500 or 4600, or look at the Solo cordless ones. Just picked up a Solo 4 yesterday for $46.00. THAT is a working man's price...and I know from using one for several years that a Passport 4500 is a really good 4-band detector (X,K,Ka,Laser). Any of the Escort models seem to do a lot better than the Cobras and the Whistlers in comparison tests, so I've stuck with them. Just my .02 :)
Get one of them that the police use to check speed...you never know what kind of powder you might get, and it's best to check it before snorting it. :jester
I use a Uniden, and like it the best of all the units I've had. It cost less than my last ticket, and has features I like. It may not be rated the highest, or be faultless in function, but for the money I'd buy another one! The biggest complaint I've heard about detectors is their ability to decifer 'correct' signals from false ones. This doesn't bother me as I'd rather be told something's out there than not, hoping the machine knows correct from incorrect. Alot of other units broadcast a signal as a means of detecting, where as the Uniden does not. So in turn it picks up signals from some other radar decectors. I have learned it's ways, and I can tell when I should be on the lookout.
I'm with zymurgist on this. A Valentine One, if you're serious. Otherwise, an Escort is certianly better than nothing. If you have ever seen a Valentine in operation I don't think you would as the question. The difference in performance and information is huge.

Sorry, but these are the only two to even consider, everything else is trash. If they save you from one ticket they just paid for them self. Both are VERY good. I tried both and ended up going with the V1. Once you get used to the arrows you will wonder how you ever got by without them. The Escort is also very good and if price is a consideration it will save you $100.
Both have a 30 day money back guarantee. Order both, try them side by side for 20 days, keep the one you like best and return the other.
Just don't even consider any other unit, not worth it.
Ill probably go with Escort strictly for price reasons. Plus, the sales person at Escort said they have a $40.00 discount promo if you trade in an older unit, which I do have.
I like the V1 too, but at $400........I'll be eating a lot of hamburger helper for dinner.
I may take the advice and try them for a couple of weeks.
