lately the transmission on my '82 has been acting finicky at times. I have noticed it doesnt seem to always shift up into overdrive. I will be driving and it shifts fine up to third gear, then it isn't shifting up into 4th when it usually did. Now whenever I take it out onto the high way it does shift, I havnt been able to tell if it is doing it late or not. Does my tranny have a controller or is it just controlled by a governor inside the tranny? I changed the tranny fluid about 15K miles ago and nothign seemed out of the ordinary, did a regular fitler kit. Any ideas? Also at random times my check engine light has bene coming on for a little bit. It never stays on long enough for me to get a computer on it and check the code. It doesnt seem to run differently when this happens...Any ideas on that?
'82 used a 700R4. No controller other than the ECM, and all it does is send a signal to the TCC for lockup.
Check the TV cable for sticking and correct adjustment first. The CEL will come on for lots of reasons, if it sets a fault code the memory in the ECM will store it for 50 starts.
IS your speedo working correctly? If the ECM is seeing an incorrect speed signal, it won't let the trans lockup. Speedo cable lube has been know to work it's way from the cable to the back of the speedo and confuse the VSS sensor. IIRC, the VSS was still in the back of the speedo in '82, but again, that's memory, so that may not be correct.

It may not be the transmission. There are other causes. Insufficient fuel pressure will mimick that condition. The check engine light coming on and going off is interesting. Even if the light does not stay on it may still have stored a code. Can you pull the codes?
