I have original LS-5 71 454 4 speed conv. When I had the motor built about a year and half ago, during the tear down I noticed it had some unusual parts in it. Like a nitrated 3521(casting) LS7 crank, 4 bolt main block with windage tray, and a LS-7 oil pan with baffle and trap door. Also I have nodular iron fly wheel. The motor had the right pistons for a LS-5, cast flat tops with 3/8 rods . The block still was a standerd bore, and the crank had never been turned. I know LS-5 blocks can be either 4 bolt or 2 bolt mains. Is it possible that GM put some LS-7 parts in LS-5's? Have any of you ever heard of this happening? My car is a early 71. September 1970 to be exact. Thanks.
Good question, My car was also built in September '70 but I have never had the pan off of it. If I ever do I'll post my findings. Can anyone add some illumination to this? Good luck!
1 A lot can happen over the years.
2 If a Hot Rodder modded it, then he would have changed the cam & probably more.:
3 W/O debating whether yours is original or not, am somewhat familiar w/ the way things worked. For ex., evidently some early GTOs got FoMoCo (Ford) 4 spd. manual trans. when the demand for GTO W/ 4 spds. exceded supply of 4spds. !
If yours is original, then expect something along these lines.
