pulled it apart, and replaced the 3-4 clutches, noticed the 2-4 apply band was breaking on the fixed end with the peg in it...and suffered stress where the servo apply pin engaged....
I was super careful to get things back to gether right again....
noticed the seals were all in good shape, looked new in fact...the input output shaft seal looked/felt good also...
now it's back in the car, and worse than ever....no reverse, weak first, weat second....no upshift either...same symptom....
old 3-4 clutches were burnt pretty good, and thinner by fair amount...replaced two of the steels also...the rest were a bit black, but ok....none had gone steel to steel yet....
remounted the brain using original gaskets....
have done that many times before....never a problem....pretty sure the checkballs are in correctly....
any ideas anyone???
BTW, New converter...

I've heard that you can get some good transmission advise there.
Good luck and keep us posted.
