I just happen to have access to my gas tank currently due to repairs.
My gas tank guage has never worked since Ive owned the car and currently is showing way pass full.
Once I removed the spare tire cover I noticed what I was told was the ground wire, was not even connected. I've tried to ground it but it hasnt made any difference.
Is there a electrical test I can do the gas tank sending unit to see if it is bad?
Could be sending unit, or wiring or even bad gauge. If you do a search here on the forum, you will find all kinds of posts on this topic and it will help you find your problem.
I got under my car and noticed the ground wire at the sending unit is not attached to anything.
I than looked at the sending unit and the tab that the the wire would connect to, appears to have broken off.
SO I than tried to get connect the ground manually and still the fuel guage looks the same.
I went to the web page listed and tried the resistance on the sender unit. I set it to 200ohms and put one tester lead on the male pin and another tester lead on the place where the ground connection appeard to have broken off.
When I do this I still get open circuit on the ohm meter.
I assume this means the sending unit is bad or could there be another explanation?
Missing 12v or gauge ? I found an easy access without dropping tank on 77 to 82. Remove gas door and bladder. Test for voltage to determine if sending unit, open or gauge defective. My problem was an open.. My point is you don't have to drop the tank or remove dash to determine the direction of the problem problem. I fixed mine in 20 minutes.[Lucky]
