HOOKER side pipe mufflers ?
I need some advise for my 68 big block with the HOOKER side exhaust.
Last Friday, at the biyearly governmental car check up, a jalous inspector had to check the noise this pipes produce.
Of course it failed. 83 decibel are allowed and he measured 87.
So I took one pipe off and got the muffler out.
It's 27.5 inch long and has a tube of 1.7 inch diameter, some kind of spiral slotted inside, glass packed. Due to the outside wall being heavily corroded and open at the ends, I suspect the glass being partly missing on the inside.
What kind of mufflers do I need to install to pass this stupid test ?
Will original HOOKER glass packs do this ?
What's about the JCL spiral baffles ? Are they more noisy ?
Or do I need to install the HOOKER reverse flow mufflers for this test ?
Problem is, I need them fast, only have 21 days. Otherwise the car needs to undergo the complete inspection procedure again.
This is a joke as everybody knows that I will reinstall less restrictive mufflers after the inspection. Stupid procedures.
Thanks Gunther :seeya
Check out JCL's spiral baffle mufflers. I don't think you will have any problem with the sound level. He installed a set on a full race car, 670hp small block, where the the track had a limit of 103 db. I think his car was only 95 at full throttle, and this was after shortening the muffler for even more flow and opening the caps. I don't believe my L88 is at 83 db at idle with his baffles in my Hooker side pipes. Should be 74 db or less. Check out his website. Very high quality product! http://www.spiralturbobaffles.com/

I gave JCL an E-mail to see if they can supply the noise level.
Their side shows levels only at 1000 RPM, the test on my car was done at 4000 RPM.
I hate to buy a pair of reverse flow mufflers just to pass this stupid test.
Thanks Gunther :seeya

I am happy that I don't live anymore in Europe. I was born in Austria and had 2 Vettes during the time I lived there. It was always a pain to go through inspections... The best option for your case would be to get some reverse flow mufflers. They are as quiet as a Caddilac but kill your performance
Remove them after the inspection and install them again for the next inspection!!!

I have a new set of Hooker reverse flow mufflers that I used on to break in my motor. If you will cover the shipping cost, I will be more than happy to send them to you. They are Jet hot coated also for what it is worth. I am not going to use them and it seems like you need them.

Pack the exhausts with a little steel wool- it will make the car as quiet as you want. After the inspection, remove the steel wool-Voila!
BTW, the Hooker side pipe mufflers cost me 95 H.P. on the dyno! Use the JCL inserts- no substantive loss.
Good Luck!

You got mail.
Thanks a lot for your generous offer.
I'm more than happy to accept.
I heard this mufflers are heavy, so I don't know about the shipping to Luxembourg in Europe.
May be it makes a hell of a difference in the shipping price to Seattle area.
From there on, they will travel on board of our companie's aircraft and shipping is free of charge for me.
Pls let me know as I am under time pressure.
This Forum is great , you always get much more as you expect. :yesnod:
Of course, the reverse flow mufflers will only be used for the inspection. :D
Again, thanks a lot.

You realy save me , hope I can pass this stupid DB test with your mufflers.
Will let you know how much they measured.
You guys are lucky to have decent check up tests in the States.
This guys over here in Europe are either jalous, try to get your money for all kinds of what they call non original additions registry or just want to show off and make truble. They are lucky that we are not allowed to carry weapons, otherwise people would loose their temper in differnt ways. :mad
I'm looking forward now being able to make this 21 day retesting limit, so they will only do the noise test and leave the rest of the car alone.
If I go over this time limit, they will redo the complete check up and might come up with something else.
I think, I will let a nice girl take this car through the test in 2 years time. Bet it will make life easy. :D
Oh, forgot , it has no PS.
Neil, your a great person and I hope I will meet you once.

Not only that you provide me with a superior service, also this packaging looks more than professional.
Our customs guys will not believe that this are used parts.
Today, I spoke with a different control station inspector and he fell sorry for me. He agreed that I could have past with only 87 DB.
He confirmed the test method that was used.
RPM setting for the test is suppost to be set to 75 % of max HP output RPM.
This figures out to be around 4.000 RPM.
Old cars are not exempt from this, all fall under the 83 DP limit. What a bommer. :mad
At least, the pipes will not find any time to corrode solid onto the header, as I now have to remove them every 2 years.
Before I take your mufflerts back out, I will put the car onto a dyno.
It's a 427 CI solid lifter 4 bolt block with a cast crank and the original L71 square heads, but has a probably too small Holley double pumper mech secondary 650 CFM carb inst. It pulls strong up to any RPM range. I don't trust taking it to the 6500 limit, but maybe a bigger carb would make a lot of difference.
This is still the strongest car on this roads and I can accelerate at any speed or gear setting leaving just everything behind me. :D
People over here don't expect this of a chrome bumper convertible car. :D
Good thing that I didn't own this when I was still jung and mad.
Neil, take some greetings along to your wife for finding all this time to arrange and send the mufflers .
Thanks to both of you. Gunther
Don't forget to tell me how much I own to you.

Looks like if I could have them in Luxembourg mid next week, definately end of next week.
This will make the 21 day time frame , so all seems to work out fine.

Good luck and hope it all was not in vain,
Neil in Tenn
Your mufflers arrived in Seattle on Monday, as promised.
Unfortunately, they didn't make the Monday flight .
I just received confirmation that they are on today's flt landing in Luxembourg at 20.00 Z time, so I will be able to have them in hands on Friday.
Because next Monday being a legal holliday in Luxembourg, I can take the car for reinspection on Tuesday.
This will meet the 21 day limit, as it only expires the 24th .
I took both side exhaust tubes off and removed the glass pack mufflers.
The driver's side muffler is corroded, but overall in reasonable condition, but the passenger side muffler was completely corroded through, it came out in 2 pieces. May be a new set of glasspacks would pass this test as well.
Anyway, I'm very positive that yours will.
Let me know when the money order has arrived, please.
Again, thanks a lot.
Gunther
OK, I have them now at home, but didn't unpack jet as it's friday evening midnight over here. I picked them up during my late shift today.
So, tomorrow, they will be installed. How will the car sound ?
:cry
Tuesday or Wednesday will be the inspection, depending on the apointment, I get, and back on the road again. :D ( I hope )
Thanks, Gunther :seeya
