U won't get much for performance with compression that low.

I know how spare time for the vette and other priorities go. Well if time is really a factor then maybe are better to have a shop just do the entire head R&R with a valve job until your ready for the new "crate". Just bolting on a set of $100 used heads may make the situation worse unless u really, really know where they came from. Once u add up costs like gaskets and supplies its more like $200 to R&R the heads. $200 that could go to a local shop that will have somewhat of a gaurentee. U would be surprized that shop prices come down near the holidays as no one is spending on car repairs and shops are begging for work just to pay the utilities.

140 sounds a little bit low on the compression, but not worn out, more like starting to get there. That bottom end very likely still has plenty of miles in it. The most important thing is the spread; if the cylinders are all pretty close to the same compression, you should be in pretty good shape. If it runs well, and just burns a little oil on startup, and you are definitely going to go with a crate motor next year, I wouldn't sink a nickle into it. Just drive it.
The heads that I bought are in far better condition than the ones on the car currently. I bought them from a guy that took them off his car to replace them with aluimum heads. On the old heads three of the exhaust valves had a lot of carbon on them so much carbon it probably weighed more than the valve itshelf and upon removing the carbon you could see the wear on the valve stems. These are toast and not worth recondtioning
The cylinders walls looked ok someone has been there before. The pistons are flat top and there was not a ridge at the top of the cylinder.
I will get it together in the next month and we we see what happens. Thanks a lot for all the help.
If it smokes a little on start up could just be your valve seals not hard nor expensive to do.
Guarantee the gasket will fix your ills.
Still have issues after that then its time to chase other things but bet youll be just fine
On the heads that I am putting on I am cleaning up the valves and lapping them and replacing the seals and using umbrella seals. Pretty sure (hopefull) that will clear up the smoke issue and get me on the road for a while.

It reads like u have the engine apart already.
FYI using a 0.015" Felpro head gasket will help increase your compression, work great with iron heads and are as cheap as any gasket. U may already know this - but just incase u didn't.
Good luck and let us know how the replacement heads work,
