Default first time at track- ran 11s!!!!

I finally got my corvette to the drag strip yesterday and made 4 passes with it. All my friends were working so I couldn't find anyone to tow me there. I ended up driving the car there and back (100miles each way)!

I have a 75 coupe with a built 350ci with 144 blower, 4speed super t-10, and 3.73 gears. I run 275/60/15 Mickey Thompson drag radials and skinnies up front. Car weights in at 3140lbs and I made 386rwhp 410rwtq on dyno.

I was hoping to run mid-low 12s with it because of the stick trans. I ended up running a best of 11.93

My first pass i ran 12.26 @ 113mph, i dropped down to 12.154 @ 114mph, then 12.06@ 114mph, then on last i broke into the 11.93 @ 115mph. I launched at a higher rpm each time and went faster. On the 11sec run i launched at 5100rpm.

I ran 22psi in my tires and did a decent burnout each time. The car hooked hard but then clutch was slipping in 1st gear. I ended up cooking the clutch and i made it home but it slips bad in every gear now!!!!

I was shifting at 6200rpm and maxing out 3rd gear a few hundred feet from finish line, once i hit 4th gear the car didnt pull as hard. My fuel pressure was also dropping at big end of track!

I need a new clutch and better fuel system and then maybe there room for improvement with this set-up.

Heres my time slip for best et

Nice first trip.
At 115 mph you show enough hp to run about half a second quicker, but that 4 speed doesnt help there.
It will be interesting to see what it does with adequate fuel pressure.

Thanks!

My fuel pressue is set at 7.5psi but noticed it dropping down to 4.5-5psi near end of 3rd gear and into 4th gear. I have a new aeromotive electric pump for it but need to install it still.

I Also need a new clutch now because i killed it. I have a hays street/strip but now i need something that will hold up for drag racing. Need to get recommendations on which brand to run now.

That's good that you ran quicker than you thought you would. Most people get disappointed their first trip out. Mostly because they can't drive, but also because they over estimate their cars performance.

Congrastulations...and double for doing it with a stick! Style points count...and I can guarantee you that everyone was paying attention to the little Vette dumping the clutch at 5100 rpm!

You're making some good power on the back half even with fuel issues gaining 23-24 mph. Get the fuel system sorted 'cause bad things happen quick with boost.

I'd look into a clutch that *gives a little* to save your trans and rear end. Unless you want to go to a fully adjustable like a McLeod Soft Lok....I'd ck out the adjustable Ram. Call Tim Hyatt and Hyatt Racing services and let him set you up with maybe a Ram that has some adjustment in it and doesn't cost stupid money. It will make everything a lot smoother and easier to control.

You got me up until the last point. Can't drive, ended up disappointed. High 12s at like 120mph. lol.

Drag radials help a lot.

first time with this car, but i had a white 75 l82 stick car that i raced a few times. My old car went a best of 13.85@102mph but it was a mild 350 with 280h comp cam and sportsman II heads.

Thanks man

When i put the motor in i was thinking of swapping to a th350/400 with manual VB and trans brake. But, I really like the 4speed stick on the street and it seems more fun when racing too. So I'm going to keep it a stick car, i do want to upgrade to a stronger transmission eventually.

I called Hyatt today and he was really cool, he talked to me for about 10min just about my set-up and suggested using a centerforce dual friction clutch with a billet steel flywheel around 25lb. He said it should hold up with my power level and will have good street manners as well. He said he could set me up with a full Racing clutch but he said i probably wont like it with my set-up. I'm looking at flywheels now; 168tooth v 153tooth and Hays, Ram, or centerforce.

My buddies are going racing next week 10/30 and i can get towed up this time. I'm might try and get new clutch and flywheel in this week, drive around a few days to break it in a little bit, and then race again next weekend. I feel like I could get addicted to drag racing quick, i had blast at the track.

I'm running a custom built 12 bolt set up with 3.73gears, 31spline axles, 3.5" halfshafts, 30spline outer axles, solid crossmember mounts, and traction bar.

I re-read your post... launching at 5100. lol

When I took my Corvette to the strip, I was launching at 1500-2000 RPM and ending up with a smoke show. It was ridiculous. (09Z). Of course, I was launching on street tires...

Great first trip out! 115 mph is some good mph.... Thats good for 11.50s or so IF you can get it to 60'/330' well.... Which is very hard with a stick.... 1.75/4.98s are a great starting point though...

get your fuel system straight and a clutch that holds and you will see improvement on the front and back.... (although 4-5 psi through the traps isnt BAD but.... on a boost car it could be...I know I have less then that on my NA setup going thru the traps.. )

You are definitely getting it done! I hope that tranny is built up...I KNOW you arent gonna break that rear end...you better get your ole man to work some voodoo on that tranny as well.....

Awesome car dude.... I would love to see it going 11.50s....(A 1.50 60' and another mph or two and you will be there..)

What was the DA?

Yup, I'm a pretty good autocrosser but when it comes to launching for max accel I'm a complete newb. By the end of the night I had subtracted a few tenthes from better shifting, but launching was getting worse.

First run was 12.8 with a 2.2 60' and last run was a 12.9 with a 2.6 60'. lol
