Carb. vacuum hose

Carb. vacuum hose
Just found the vacuum hose runs direct from carb. to dist. advance. The temp. sensor in intake and plastic valve are still hooked up but are bypassed from carb. to dist. What does this plastic valve do and should it be rehooked up??

1979 L48 350
Plastic fitting is aprox 1.5 in dia. and 3/8 thick with nipples on each side
Discription as follows; Temp. sensor sim. to the one in thermostat housing except only 2 nipples. Hose should come from carb to plastic
fitting nipple stanped vac. On opp side of plastic fitting is nipple labled dist. On side of plastic fitting are 2 hoses leading to the temp. sensor screwed into intake. This is located just to the rear of thermostat housing. It appears that it shuts off vac. advance when engine temp.
is above or below a given point. I'm sure it has something to do with smog system. Everything seems to run fine the way it is. I have owned the Vette for 31 years and it was that way when I pur. it from first owner. All other smog hoses are hooked up as required. I have seen some pic. of 79 Vetts that have a smog pump but this one does not and never did have one. That could be because it was delivered in Ohio where there were no smog rules at that time.
