I am looking at a '69 BB convertible with headers and factory style side exhaust. While it does sound great, it is way too loud for my already damaged hearing to contend with if I purchase the car. Is there a way to quiet the factory style pipes with any kind of an insert that is offered? If not, I'll definately have to figure in going back to under car exhaust.
Hi ms,
Are you sure there are factory style pipes and mufflers under those covers? I ask because it takes some custom work to hook factory side pipes to headers.
Maybe there's a muffler under there that you could quiet down in some way.
Regards,
Alan
Alan, it has the factory style covers, and to be sure, there is some "custom" work (don't ask) from the header collector to the front of the sidepipe. I could not really see what's under the cover because we had it on a drive-on hoist. I was maybe wrongly assuming it would be a straight-through chambered pipe like the sidepipes were on my '66. He did say something about "spirals" and no mufflers. I looked at a few of the Vette catalogues and see only the exhaust pipe for sale with no mention of a separate baffle or insert available. I just wondered if anyone knew of anything that would work to quiet it down to a reasonable decibal level.
Hi ms
The original 69 side -exhaust is/was different than those on your 66.
The 69 used what can be described as a long thin muffler, not chambered pipe.
Since the word 'spiral' was used I think you'll find something custom made, or modified aftermarket, under those covers.

Alan
the good news if they are decent Spirals you can change the baffling.
and adjust to your comfort level.
you will have to determine exactly the muffler configuration.
