Default Noisy Elec. FUEL pump (spell checked this time)

I installed a Carter electric fuel pump installed on the right rear frame rail and it sounds like I have an RC airplane in the trunk. This is an inline unit and I used all the rubber mouting. It feeds a standard holley 650 carb. I wanted an electic carb after having a unit fail on my 68 pickup and it sparyed fuel on the camshaft. Anyways, I'm looking for a replacement and there is a lot of units intended for fuel injection. I like the sleek style of the Holley in-line fuel pump, but its intended for FI.
My question to the experts...If I run a fuel pump intended for a FI system what problems will I have? Let me add that I modified the original fuel lines at the engine so I could retain the stock fuel pump becuase I wanted to keep the return line working. I also installed a regulator close to the carb and set it at 6lbs.

What happens to the fuel when pumped at higher pressure and it hits the regulator? Does the extra fuel pressure get sent down the return line? How much can a stock filter flow anyhow? Is there any damage to a fuel pump that's trying to pump 45lbs and is hitting resistance all the time?

Any suggestions would be appreciated...

Thanks!!

Others are more knowledgable about this than I, but I would think that with a stock engine and a 650 Holley that you really don't need a whole lot of pressure. I'm not sure what would happen though if you were pounding 50-60psi into a regulator set a 6psi.

I'm using a Holley 801 which is self-regulated between 4-6psi feeding a Road Demon 625cfm. I have it mounted to the frame (in this case not a Vette Frame) and wrapped it in thick adhesive backed rubber padding to insulate and then the bracket around that. You can't hear it once the engine fires up.

I figure any machanical/electrical pump is gonna make some noise. I have had the vette on the street just a week or two and I already had someone ask me what the loud noise was coming from the rear...and they we're not talking about the exhaust.

My other GM vehicles have factory installed electric fuel pumps and I can't hear a peep out of them. So I won't accept the possibility that all electric fuel pumps are obnoxiously loud at this point.

you need to get a Holley red, blue, or black series pump. They are meant for carbs rather than the FI. They range from 6-14 psi depending on the pump. Since you have the regulator up there already it would be safe to go with anyone of those. The reason I saw is because the black and blue ( i think) require a regulator. Just use your return line if they require the use of a regulator.
All pumps are slightly noisy though....Just means you need a louder exhaust!! :jester

Factory installed fuel pumps are usually lacated in the fuel tank and not on the frame rail. The tank (and fuel) provides a bit of insulation from the noise you're hearing. I believe that noise was a large consideration in the location of factory installed pumps.

Jeff,

First let me ask why I haven't seen your vette since you finished it :jester

I think unless you are planning to converting to FI I would get a pump that is made for a carburated vehicle. If you are not moving enough fuel the pump will burn out pretty quickly. Also why do the looks of the pump matter when the pump should be mounted somewhere that it cannot be seen whent the car is on the ground.
