Default Shift console light

On my 81, there is a light which stays on while the head lights are on. The light is loosly hanging under the center console. Does this light supposed to light up the shift display?? If so mine does not. I can not find any place for the bulb to fit into. Again an 81 with manual tranny. Thanks for any input. Al

The lamp fits in this housing and yes it is supposed to light up the heater control and console.

It was a pitiful design and used a special bulb as well. (projection style)

Found at this link:

To get to the bulb you'll need to remove the center dash bezel. You'll find instructions on doing this listed on the sight under dash pad removal. Or click this link and then click on supporting document.

You find the dash bezel removal on page 5 but it actually starts on page 4. Pay attention to the two screws under the shift plate, they can be a bear to get at.

Your problem is probably the bulb or it could be that the bezel is not plugged in. Only removal of the bezel will tell you.
