Default Alternator Question

My buddy with the 514 Mustang has a question about his alternator. He is running an AC Delco alternator. What exactly does the plug that goes into the alternator do? He has the two terminal prongs sticking out of the alternator but he doesn't have a plug to plug into it. What do those two plug wires come off of?

His Mustang has been running fine without it but he wants to know what it is for.

Big Block Update:
I slapped the Holley 850 Double Pumper on, I do have a question though. The carburetor has the four corner idle circuit adjustment...I thought the double pumpers only had two idle adjustments? At any rate the carburetor and throttle linkage is hooked up. The transmission is bolted in (Moroso solid tranny mount :D) with the driveshaft. The clutch is adjusted. My shifter linkage was binding up severly so I had to mess around with it and now have it shifting as smooth as it ever did. Both headers are bolted up and held into place with the Stage 8 locking header bolts. To anyone thinking about purchasing these bolts....do it, they are an excellent idea.

With the headers on, I then installed my spark plugs and cut and fit my spark plug wires. I stripped down my valve covers and repainted them, I'll bolt them on tomorrow. I need to put my pulleys on and get all new radiator hoses. I have all the vacuum lines hooked up. I'm going to break the engine in using the reverse flow mufflers for my Hooker side pipes. I want the engine to be as quiet as possible for break-in, that way I can hear the engine to make sure it's not going to knock or what not. Afterwards the mufflers are coming out and it's open header side pipes baby (or at least until I can't take it anymore) :D. I'm hoping to fire it up the middle of this week or this weekend at the latest.

No answer to the alternator question. In fact, I'm curious about the answer myself. :D

Thanks for the update on the big block progress!

Generally, on a 4 wire internally regulated alternator there is a heavy red wire, + output to the starter/battery. Black negative wire or housing ground. On the plug, there is a sensor wire which regulates the voltage output. This can compensate for voltage loss between the alternator and dash, but it's commonly just crossed to the + ouput terminal. The other plugin terminal is a souce where voltage is supplied with the key in run position.

Thanks for the update! Sounds like it's getting close to ground pounding with a BIG BEAST under the hood.

For the mustang I assume you are talking about the plug that has the F and S markings. This is the Stator and Field connections. I'm not sure that the Field connection comes directly from the battery on a 12 or 14 gauge wire, and I'm not sure that the stator connection comes from the Run terminal of the ignition switch on a 14 or 16 gauge wire. A couple of forum members have mustangs...perhaps they will have an answer that's not so flakey.

Shane

If you got em, you may want to break your cam in with exhaust manifolds. Seen some post where people cook the paint/coating of em during break in cuz of running rich. Plus a fresh engine runs hotter since everything is tight. Once cam is broken you can set up the headers and carb without dealing with the heat from break in.

Just a thought. Bet your getting excited to hear it roar.

Sounds like things are progressing well for you Bence. Won't be long now till that fire breathing dragon starts gobbling up local ricers and 'stangs. :D
Say... I've been looking for those stage 8 locking header bolts... what am I missing??? Can't find em.. where did you get them??? Thanks Bence, and GOOD LUCK!!!
