Default Rebuilding Muncie M20-Help!

Got it torn down, acquired a couple replacement gears, sync, washers, snap washers, gaskets, seals, etc and am trying to put it back together. Got the cluster/counter gear back in finally after removing the anti noise plate, but it was pretty tight with the thrust washers. Now the main shaft installation is giving me a fit. Got it all back together, but cannot get the last snap washer on far enough for it to snap in at the rear bearing. I have tried banging on it some and pressed it the best I could (don't have a machine press), but it just won't go. I've double checked the appropriate placement of the parts based on a diagram I got from TBTransmission and it looks right.

Any suggestions or questions?

I had to press mine on with a piece of pipe over the tailshaft. If you've got it on far enough to see the groove for the snapring, it may be you're using too thick of one. Mine came with 3 or 4 thickness snaprings. The thickest one would not fit.

I took some pictures but I don't know how to reduce their file size and they won"t load because they are too large.

I'm wondering if I am trying to install a snap ring that is too thick?? I tried to find a thinner one locally but no luck.

The Carolina Collector Auto Fest is this weekend at the NC Farigrounds, so I thought I would ask around there.

Open the picture in Paint (if you are using windows). Then click the button that says "Resize"

Use that to reduce it to the largest size allowed.

Hard to tell from only those pics, but it appears the 2nd gear sychro is up tight against 2nd gear. Is it a new synchro? If it cant apply pressure against the cone surface of the gear it wont work as it should.

On the the snap ring.Is the mid plate up tight against the main case?
I usually assemble the main shaft, minus the reverse gear, with the mid plate on the bench prior to trying to stab it into the main case. Gears, synchros ,dogs, sliders, snap rings, rear main bearing & mid plate.
What may be that holding you up is the sleeve(item 51) that presses onto the mainshaft under the 2nd gear.its probably not on all the way.

Pull the mainshaft out of the case and start disassembly and reassembly with light machine oil or a assembly lube.

Nothing wrong with a bit. of dissassembly reassembly to get it right

I've only done a few but I dont think I could have ever got the sleeve off or on without a press. Make sure the sleeve is pressed on all the way. As stasted above, press the rear bearing/midplate on the shaft before you put the assembly in the case.
The rear bearing snapring comes in 0.087, 0.090, 0.093, and 0.096 thickness. Use the thickest one that will fit.
