I had some thrush turbo mufflers one time with 2.5 in and out and the car ran like a 3 legged dog.
I looked in them and the inside pipe was 1 3/4, thats why they are a universal muffler, 1 muffler fits all with different size joining pipe.
Now the Thrush welded mufflers are awesome because, you guessed it, they sound like a Flowmaster!!!!!
It's funny, many years ago I put an early Flowmaster American Thunder system on the Z28 in my avatar and it lost significant power above 3000-4000 RPMs. I called Flowmaster to talk about it and they said they'd confer that day. They called me back and told me that it was because the system flowed so much better than the glasspacks it replaced that my mixture was going lean. I played with jetting & timing but it didn't improve.
I finally pulled it back off and put on the current Dynomax UltraFlos. Mysteriously all of my lost power came back. Some time later I was talking to a guy at a local speed shop and ended up telling him the story. It so happens that he had been with Flowmaster during the time period when I had the problem and was still strongly connected to the company. He called the guys there and, in exchange for my old system, he gave me 2 brand new muffs from them. They admitted then that they had to redesign the system because it wasn't breathing properly in its early version. I thought it was good of them to make it good after all that time. However, I gave those muffs to a buddy and never looked back.
The only muffs on that car that ever ran worse? Mufflers from Thrush called Thrush Hush. They were a turbo style muff that were supposed to be quiet but that poor motor was gagging on them.
To the OP- if you can, go to some car meets and listen to as many C3s as you can and find out what appeals to your ear. If you find something you like ask if the car has headers because they do make a difference in how a car sounds. Good luck.

What ever. Just perhaps you should of looked inside before you purchased them. I can't imagine not inspecting any muffler befor I purchased it. So perhaps they are not so universal after all.
Flow master's design is newer that the Thrush's, so perhaps they sound like the Thrush Turbo.
I thought your buzzing meant that low pitched drone. Theres nothing whirring about a turbo? You may have a busted one-
I have 2 turbos on my 67 that do not make that low pitched noise, havea different tone altogether Summit sells them
Hooker super comp turbo they sound decent and are cheap. Getting swapped out soon though.
Thrush has reengineered all their mufflers when they were bought supposedly they all flow pretty decent. Havent used them myself, they were the ticket back in the day everybody had a set of turbos and turndowns.

1:Really, you think Summit will send them to you for a looky loo before you buy them???
2: They were on a i car I bought and I don't think the guy would let me cut off the mufflers of his car so I could look in them, would you???

ok. i can agree with drone. im just looking for a different sound. something a little deeper, maybe a little meaner.

I'm a hands on guy.
I look around and find what I want then order it where ever.
The name Thrush Hush should tell you they are quieter.
The Thrush Turbos I purchased are 2 1/4 in and out.
I have 2 1/2 true dual exhaust all the way back.
When I rev it up people smile.
And the price was reasonable and less than Flow Masters.
When I worked for Dynomax 11 years ago, we tested all the competitive performance mufflers. The Flowmasters consistently had the worst flow of the "real" performance mufflers. If you look at their internal design, the first thing the incoming exhaust hits is a WALL, then there are a series of more walls. This is NOT good for flow.
The Thrush California Turbo is a cheap muffler shop "performance" muffler, & it is not a good performance muffler because it has small diameter flow tubes internally. They have 2 internal tubes & no packing. The Dynomax Super Turbo looks "stock" on the outside, but internally they are a nice piece. They have large internal flow tubes (a 2.5" in/out Super Turbo will have 2.5" internal flow tubes) & also flow directors, or internal bank-turns so the exhaust does not hit a flat wall when it reverses course to travel back. Super Turbos have 3 internal perf cores, plus a fiberglass mat that wraps around the center section of the muffler.
Dynomax Ultra Flows are a straight-through design, & they will outflow the Super Turbos about 4-to-1.

I zeroly believe that unless it was an under powered engine that couldn't handle the better flowing exhaust and ran bad due to less back pressure.
I am always surprised that no one ever seems to mention the Monza Turbos-These have been on my car since 1989! No drone, not loud under normal driving, good sound at WOT.
233 RWHP from an all internally stock L-82-65,000 miles-motor never been opened.
From: Who says "Nothing is impossible" ? I've been doing nothing for years.
Suprised noone has mentioned the Magaflows. I had them on my 355ci and loved them for some stupid reason I decided to try others as my engines got bigger and bigger, first was the Flowmasters, sounded like a drumroll on a garbage can lid and were so loud people were pulling up short of the light so they wouldn't have to hear it.
Second was the Dynomax Super Turbos, better than the flowmasters but still didn't like them so $1000 parts and labor and finally had the sound I wanted back with the Magnaflows. They have a 3 inch pipe straight thru you could roll a golf ball through.
Anyway if anyone is interested I have a clip of the Magnaflows on my 355ci and my 427ci just to hear what they sound like
Here's a clip of me seeing what I could get away with RPM wise shifting.
Seems nothing worked and I had to have it on a roll or I would spin the tires and before anyone says you shift like a moron I wasn't even planning on shifting I was only interested in the first 60ft as I was going to the track that night, then I found out the first turnaround was way up the street so I shifted into second around 4 grand probaly glazed the clutch a bit. If you watch it to then end you can hear it idling for a few secs
But the idea of the post is to hear what the Magnaflows sound like
