Transmission shift lock
Hi All,
I recently aquired a 72 Corvette, 4 speed manual with a Hurst Shifter and noticed that there is a mechainical cable connected to the steering column at the point where the steering column comes through the firewall into the engine compartment. the other end of the cable is not connected to anything but looks like it would connect to the shifting linkage so that the shifter is locked when the steering wheel is locked.
Is this something that is only used with an automatic transmissions or should it work with a manual transmission too?

Thanks for the information guys. I don't have any history or build sheets on the car so I thought it might have had a automatic in it at some point. Good to know how it is suppose to work too.

Hi nh,
76sr is right; the cable runs from the shift lever on the trans to the lever on the steering column and prevents the trans from being shifted out of reverse unless the key is in the ignition and the key is turned from 'lock'.
The idea was a theft deterent, and works indepenent of your Hurst shifter.
