Default 74 clutch adjustment

Hello. I just got my car back on the road, and before I did, I adjusted the clutch. I followed the procedure listed in the AIM and service manual by : 1. Loosening the nuts, pulling all the way back on the clutch pedal 2. While pushing forward on the clutch crossshaft, lightly pushing on the TO bearing 3. Tightening the adjustment nut until it touches the shaft, and backing it off 4 and 1/2 full revolutions ("turns" in the AIM and service manual).

The clutch enguages fine, but it seems to engauge too far off the ground. Before, the clutch also worked fine, but started to engauge about 1/2'' to 3/4'' off the ground, where as now it's about half of the entire pedals travel to engauge slightly.

Is this how it is supposed to be, and can it be adjusted to enagauge closer to the ground (thats how I like it)?

Will

Back in the days when I had a '68 Chevelle with a manual transmission I always adjusted the clutch until I had about one inch of free play in the clutch pedal before you felt the resistance. It always worked well for me.

For the resistance, do you mean the clutch starting to grab, or when pushing down on the pedal (traditional free play)? Before I adjusted it to specs this current time, I had adjusted it before, and I had about the 1 1/2'' of free play called for, now I have less - maybe about 1 inch (I dont really remember, I'll check tomorrow and report back). I have a new clutch with probably 1500 miles on it, and the adjustment is almost on the end of the shaft, is that right for a new clutch?

If you increase the free play, the clutch will engage closer to the floor. About 1 1/2" of free play should be fine.

Alright, thanks for the info. I have about 1 inch of free play right now, and maybe I'll adjust it, but I am kinda mentally adjusted to it now so I may just leave it or adjust it slightly (Maybe 1/2 more inch)
