I'm working on rebuilding the brake calipers on my 74 Vette and have a question..............
The calipers were rebuilt about 15 years ago by Vette Brakes in FL. I'm disassembling them and replacing the seals and pistons with the new O-ring design pistons. Once everything was cleaned out, I noticed the stainless sleeves were stained like they were beginning to corrode after the years. There is no roughness inside. Is there anybody that has any experience in prepping these for new pistons? I was thinking of lightly cleaning up the discoloration with some 400 grit wet/dry paper. Anyone else have suggestions/experience?? Thank you all in advance!!
My guess is they've picked up rust particles from farther inside the calipers.
I had mine develop some "rust spots" on them, but it wiped off with clean brake fluid. Give that a try, and then I might consider 1600 or so grit sandpaper. Don't even think about using 400, that's way too rough.
I used a brake hone on mine. You can buy one at any auto parts store, get the fine grit stone set. You can do it with a drill or better yet mounted in a drill press vise. Be sure to lubricate with oil while honing. Be careful as the SS sleeves are often not exactly on the centerline of the original bore which can leave a lip of the casting at the bottom. Keep the hone above any such lip. Using a hone insures that the bore stays circular.
