Default adjusted my 68s voltage regulator

searched and found volt. reg. is adjustable. with multi meter, tested alt. was putting out 17.62 when running.13.88 when off. after adjusting phillips head screw under the volt. reg., got it down to 13.99 when running at,at volt. reg. and 13.89 at batt. when running.main reason for this post is ive had a hot start problem since i bought my 68 2 years ago,its a 327 4 speed. from reading search posts, etc. i see that high output from alter. can slowely kill, and overheat a cars battery.im not sure if i cured my problems yet,,i just adjusted the volt. reg. ten minutes ago. cant wait till i go to napa for a load test on batt.and they will check alternator etc. im thinking ill need a good, new battery,,,and hopefully end the slow dragging starter or complete no crank syndrom..what do you guys think,,,batt. is 4 years old,ya i know, its close to death,,maybe cooked from over charging. new lifetime napa alt. clean grounds everywhere belts are taught.

Ya might think about a heat blanket for the starter too. The big reason for the heat soak on the starter is it is right behind the header pipe
