Taking out my differential(81) and got the spring removed and both half shafts, half shafts had star bolts holding the u-joint caps, but on the rear driveshaft u-joint from what i can see they look to be 12 point bolts and smaller size?? Anyone know the exact size and head type?
Glad i bought a southern car,it's nice not having any bolts snapping off.
I will climb under again today for another try. On the front u-joint they just have 3/8 head 6 point bolts, but on the rear joint the heads look real small,i tried a few 6 point sockets and they either spun around or were to small.12 points might do the trick.
Thanks.
I did the same with an ordinary boxwrench, which is a 12 point.
I was concerned by the room required to get the socket AND the ratchet in.
A box is a lot smaller, but of course you have to reinsert over and again; I have also a CA car, and after the first turn I could undo the bolts by hand

Another question, did they use a gasket on the differentails? Mine only had a greyish white RTV on it. Thinking maybe it has been apart before, everything looks good inside, lube wasn't to bad looking and no metallic pieces in the bottom.
